DEVIANT BY ADRIAN MCKINTY

Deviant by Adrian McKinty.

Danny Lopez is new in town. He made a mistake back home in Las Vegas, and now he has landed at an experimental school in Colorado for “tough cases.” At the Cobalt Charter School, everything is scripted—what the teachers say, what the students reply—and no other speaking is allowed. This supercontrolled environment gives kids a second chance to make something of themselves. But with few freedoms, the students become sitting ducks for a killer determined to “clean up” Colorado Springs. Hmm this book was well written and quite descriptive in places , you could literally see what was being described. Th whole school gangs part of the book was of course spot on. The school and how it was run was frankly weird, it was as though the people living there prior to Danny and his families arrival were in some sort of cult. It really came across as weird, though I reckon there are some teachers out there who wish the school system was more like that. I have to admit that I didn't find this book an easy read, i felt like I was waiting for something to actually happen. Then there was the whole Cat killings, which was more believable. The way the kids got together to try and work out who the killer was more interesting. That was what kept me reading because I wanted to know who the killer was, and it was quite a twist when we found out who was responsible and of course the whole one that got away scenario. Its difficult to explain without giving away any spoilers but to do so would give away the whole book!
The other enjoyable part of the book was the relationship between Danny and Walt (his step father). In the beginning he kind of just puts up with him for his mums sake, then by the end of the book both Walt and Danny have become closer, so close that Danny calls Walt dad. Danny actually realises and accepts that Walt truly cares for him, as he admits to himself that he cares what happens to Walt.
The book didn't go very far and was a bit odd but, don't let me put you off, i just prefer more of a story and more action in my books!
