Hare Moon - An Original Forest Of Hands And Teeth Story by Carrie Ryan is a novella that is set prior to the first book about the character of Tabitha she has a feeling that something exists beyond the fences surrounding her small village. One day she decides to explore and meets a boy, whom she falls in love with, but can Tabitha leave her village to go away with this boy and risk becoming one of the unconsecrated? The unconsecrated are literally the living walking dead.
You do not have to read this novella prior to The Forest Of Hands trilogy but it does explain how the character Tabitha is in later books and why she is as she is. I had actually read the first book before I read this novella and still enjoyed it as much. I would say it kind of sets the scene for the books, as its the original background of Tabitha.
