EXCERPT #2

My eyes popped open to the glare of broad daylight filling the room.  I stared disoriented at the ceiling, for a moment convinced the ancient planetary mural really was moving, celestial bodies swirling and drifting above my head.  I blinked a few times to set them back to their rightful places, and rolled to my side to check the clock.  I groaned as I realized I’d slept all of half an hour.  I flopped onto my back again, blankly looking up to the ceiling once more.  I’d loved that ceiling from first sight—its cracked, fading paint washed out to soft pastels—but in that moment the two blue planets directly above my head looked far too much like a pair of staring eyes.  I groaned again, rolling back to my side, this time sliding my feet from the covers to meet the floor.
I made my way to the shower, still wrestling off the stretchy bodysuit as I walked.  I cursed the bizarre space-age material that clung to my limbs like it was refusing to let go—perhaps in retaliation for my insulting commentary.  The feeling of entrapment reminded me of the nightmare still hanging in the back of my mind; and I took out my frustrations by hurling curse words at the suit as I twisted it off my leg, chucking the wadded ball of rubbery fabric to the corner.  My exasperated snarl echoed off the stony bathroom walls.
“Great,” I grumbled to myself, turning on the hot water.  “Sure hope this place has good sound insulation.”  I kept up the grouchy muttering as I stepped under the cascading waterfall.  “Best not to publicize the fact that I’m fighting with inanimate objects…and losing.”
I lathered quickly, the refreshing water beginning to snap me out of my delirious funk.  By the time I was finished showering, I was surprisingly awake.  Yet the dream that had haunted my sleep was all the more vivid in my mind.  I toweled off and dressed hastily, eager to discuss it with Aeron.

She has found her calling in this world as a physician. It’s an ideal outlet for her compassionate spirit...and unearthly healing powers.

Palta may spend her nights rereading Jane Austen novels, but she deliberately avoids pursuing her own love story. Human men — attractive as they may be — inevitably grow old and wither, leaving her to grieve in solitude. Frankly, no one has seemed worth the torment.

Enter Eric Moran, the intensely attractive and enigmatic new coworker on the scene. With his quiet confidence and warm smile, he manages to draw Palta’s attention. Little does she know that he, too, holds a secret…one that will propel them both into an escalating collision of two worlds.

Palta learned long ago not to expect a “normal” life.  She’d settle for one free of close encounters with supernaturally-gifted homicidal maniacs.

Apparently that’s too much to ask.

Join your favorite Onontian royal family, as they settle into life at the palace...only don’t get too comfortable, because things are about to take a hair-raising turn.

Demon hunter Ty Burdin hung up his guns, knife, trench coat and fedora a year ago. Bags packed, hands washed of all demon politics, he’s done. Forever.

In fact, to get far far away, he dragged Nora, his rockabilly secretary, from Miami to the Tennessee mountains where he’s lived a life of peace—if peace can be defined as drowning in scotch and taking private eye jobs to keep the lights on. Jobs for real people. Not demons.

No demons.

He’s retired from that. Remember?

Demon hunters aren’t a dime a dozen, though, and when Ty’s brother asks him for a favor—just one—what’s a brother to do? Agreeing to take down one hillbilly demon shouldn’t take that long. In. Decapitate. Out. Favor complete. Back to the office where Nora and his bottle of whiskey are waiting.

Unfortunately for Ty, staying retired doesn’t seem to be in the cards, and an avalanche of bad luck draws him right back to an agency he despises and the career that nearly cost him his sanity.

CLEAN SLATE COMPLEX - A DAYNIGHT STORY BY MEGAN THOMASON

ASIN: BOOCFQYOJY
Series: Daynight
Publisher: Self/INdie
Pages/File Size: 71pages/233KB
Formats Available: E-Book

BLURB from Goodreads
(Note: this is a parallel story to daynight that can be read before or after daynight. Timing is after daynight occurs.)

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…

Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?

MY REVIEW
I purchased this novella from Amazon.co.uk. The cover shows a bus parked in front of an apartment building. The bus and the building are kind of gleaming white suggesting cleanliness and perhaps purity. They both belong to the Second Chance Institute (SCI) who run the Clean Slate Complex. I like the cover as , all becomes clear about the cover when you read the novella.
So Alexa is a homeless young girl who is caring for her sick mother whilst living in a van with her three larger older brothers. It becomes apparent that Alexa's mum needs medical attention, but on the way to the SCI clinic or nearest hospital the van breaks down. It also happens to break down in a rather rough rundown area. Alexa's brothers go to phone for help leaving Alea with their mum. Unfortunately a run down man (probably a junkie) attacks Alexa. Alexa does fight back as best she can as her brothers have taught her to. Sadly it appears that her life may truly be in danger as the junkie is getting the upper hand in the fight. Then a vehicle pulls up and comes to Alexa's rescue. The vehicle is a bus that belongs to the Second Chance Institute. Also around the same time as the bus stops Alexa's three brothers arrive back panicking about what is happening.
Alexa, and her brothers are taken to the Clean Slate Complexes, whilst their mother is immediately taken to the medical centre/clinic within the complex too. The complex is so full that Alexa is given a room in the private quarters of the couple who run the complex. It's where Alexa meets Joshua, who gives some quite confusing signals as is he may be against the institute his parents are the heads of. The whole ethics of the place seem somewhat too good to be true, I mean no one does such things for nothing do they? That is a question Alexa finds herself asking more and more as times goes on during her stay at the Complex. Who can Alexa speak about her fears to? Who can she trust? Is it safe to speak out? What's with the strange Reallocation ceremony, where do the reallocated go?
This is a well written, brilliantly cryptic novella. There always seems to be something going on. The novella has drama, suspense, danger, adventure, betrayal, conspriracy and a little romance and friendship thrown in.
So did I enjoy the novella? Yes, it's quite a decent length novella. I liked Alexa's feisty character and the fact she didn't just take things at face value, she questioned incidents around her. Would I recommend the novella? Yes, it was a good read even if you don't go on to read the rest of the series. Would I read more in this series? I'd definitely like to read more in the series.  Would I read other books by Megan Thomason? I liked the style and pace of the writing so I guess I'd take a look at other books by the Author yes.

BLURB from Goodreads
Before the accident. Before their universes collided. Before they fell in love.

Riveting and romantic, Undone: An Unraveling Novella contains three short stories set in the world of Unraveling, the first book in the gripping sci-fi duology by Elizabeth Norris.

Before Ben Michaels saved Janelle Tenner’s life, Janelle saved Ben when he stumbled through an interuniverse portal into a completely new world. That day, he fell in love with the girl of his dreams. And he never forgot her.

Through three stories told from Ben’s point of view, learn how Ben and his friends discovered their ability to travel between worlds, how Ben first met Janelle, and how he pined for her for years before he actually got the chance to meet her, save her life, and capture her heart. And find out what happens to Ben between the cliff-hanger conclusion to Unraveling and the beginning of its heart-stopping sequel, Unbreakable.

MY REVIEW
I purchased this novella from Amazon.co.uk. The cover is a scenic view of the ocean, where Ben had been rescued by Janelle when he fell through the portal that first time in Unraveling. The cover also has the byline, "Before the accident, Before their Universes collided, Before they fell in love." which does describe the time this novella is covering.
So this novella is again from Ben's point of view. The novella explains how Ben and the other  boys came to end up in the basement of Ben's best friend Eli. It explains how they literally fell through their first portal. It all happened by accident.
Book One Unraveling ended on a cliffhanger with us wondering if Ben and Eli had actually made it safely home, back to their parents and families. This novella tells us that story, we learn how things have in some cases drastically changed for the boys families.
This novella also ends on a cliffhanger where the boys are trapped together in a room. They aren't sure who their captors are but they aren't adverse to using people the two boys care about to force the boys to "work" for them.
I did enjoy the novella, though I read it as one novella rather than three short stories though I do see how you could say there are three parts. The first part was okay, interesting. The second part learning what had happened to the families was one of the most interesting part. It was so well written, you felt the boys disbelief at how much things had changed, as well as how guilty they felt for what they had put their families through. You also felt their "homesickness" of missing the last place they had been.
Then abruptly they are kidnapped, by whom w the reader are left to wonder, the reason why is obviously due to the fact the guys can open portals. they are asked to !work" for their captors, which both guys decline, something horrible happens caused by the captors, a tactic to get them to toe the line and do as requested. Do they give in? Well I guess we have to wait for Book #2 Unbreakable for those answers.
So did I enjoy the novella? Yes, I enjoyed the last two thirds the most, with the families being re-introduced in the mid section of the novella. then obviously the last section of the novella is setting the scene for Unbreakable.   Would I recommend the novella?  Yes, especially for the family reunions! The novella bridges the gap between Bk#1 and Bk#2 really well. The novella got me back into the series and wanting to read Bk#2. Taking all that into account I'd say this novella is a MUST read.  Would I want to read on in the series? Definitely, this novella has made the story feel fresh again in my head, updated me on what happened after the cliffhanger of Bk#1 and set the scene for Bk#2. Would I read other books by Elizabeth Norris? I would definitely take a closer look at any book by Elizabeth Norris.

WHAT ONCE WE FEARED - THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH BY CARRIE RYAN

ASIN: B00B3GMP6C
Series: The Forest Of Hands and Teeth
Publisher: Delacorte Books
Pages/File Size: 25pages/890KB
Formats Available: E-Book

BLURB from Goodreads
When the zombie apocalypse hits and the dead begin to rise, Jonah and his friends are on a class field trip downtown.  Panicked, they make a split-second decision to seek shelter in the Overlook, an apartment complex built like a fortress on the edge of town.  But as they begin to face the realities of what it will take to survive, they realize that while making the decision of where to run was easy, living out the consequences of that decision may be impossible.  From Carrie Ryan, theNew York Times bestselling author of the Forest of Hands and Teeth books, What Once We Feared is an original digital short story about facing a world that is forever changed and in which survival means more than merely escaping the undead.

MY REVIEW
As I've read all the other books in this great series I decided to buy this novella. I expected to find out about the characters in the series before Bks 0.5 to 3. The cover fits the novella well but I'm not sure I'd say it totally fits the whole series of books.
I admit I believed that this novella would be about the actual people in the rest of the series, but it wasn't. This book had a main character of a boy. Well a group of school children, I'd say teenagers. The group are visiting a local attraction when the apocalypse "hit". Within the group of teens is one whose father has an apartment in a nearby high rise building complex.
It tells their story of how they managed to fight their way to the apartment and what they had to do to survive.
So did I enjoy the novella? Yes, it's definitely worth reading, though I would value it more as a standalone novella or the start of another Apocalyptic Series rather than say its part of The forest Of Hands And Teeth Series. Would I recommend the novella? As a short standalone novella yes. As being a necessary part of The Forest Of Hands And Teeth Series that you need to read, no. Would I read more of this Series? I've read all of the books in this series that are available at this time. Would I read more books by Carrie Ryan? Yes I would as I like her writing style and I like the dystopian, and post apocalyptic genres.

PROMOTIONAL SPOTLIGHT & AUTHOR INTERVIEW - BURN IT BY JENNIFER CIE

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
Hi Jeanz, and, amazing followers of Jeanz’s Book Read ‘N Review. My name is Jennifer Cie and I am an aspiring author from Memphis, Tennessee, currently living in Philadelphia, PA.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I actually did not always want to be a writer. That dream came after I found out I was tone death, some time in-between my resolve to become a poet and love affair with the idea of being a rich stranger travelling the world. Maybe one day, all the ends will meet.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
Burn It is the name of my latest book, which will be officially released on July 29th. If I had to describe it in less than 20 words I’d say it’s the kiss of an honest heartbreak from start to finish.

BURN IT

Jennifer Cie

BLURB from Goodreads
With the rest of her life ahead of her, Jennifer Cie is taking a step back. As she reflects on what was once next, Jennifer dives into the past, finding mortality in no longer remembering how magical the world felt as a child, apologizing for the moment she realized she could not be her Prince Charming’s Cinderella, and lamenting the idea that in death people forget “there doesn’t have to be a dead body in the room”. A collection of “what I wish someone would've told me” narratives exploring youth, love, and death, the reader is taken on a riveting ride through Jennifer Cie's past as she accepts the present.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self publish?
There no publishing house. I’m actually self-publishing Burn It through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Program and Create Space.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
It takes me a ridiculously long time to finish writing a book. I always get new ideas for another piece and forget what I was working on. However, I will say it only took a little over a year to completely finish Burn It.

Which of your books was the hardest to write?
Writing Burn It was a lot harder than writing my first book, Memphis Rain. The difference in content and style definitely brought out more of my emotions while writing. Since, Burn It was made to be a creative non-fiction memoir of standalone pieces it was a lot harder to fall in love with than Memphis Rain, is was fiction.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Fiction is definitely in the immediate future of my writing. I’ve had some great ideas keeping me up at night that I’m working on right now. I would definitely say, that genre will be the focus of the next couple books I hope to put on paper.

Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
All I can say about it right now, since I change story directions at least 4 or 5 times when I’m writing a book is that this piece I’m working on is historical fiction and it could very well be a series. That’s all though. I don’t make any promises.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing?
Writing Routine? You know, if I’m being honest I have a really lame routine. I like to go to coffee shops, some local and of course the jolly green straw giant and just type. Sometimes it’s all gibberish about the people I end up watching, but most days I get really good chapters out of going to coffee shops. I think being around the clashing aromas, and “I have a tall this and that, low fat, with extra whip” shouts puts me at ease.

Do you have anybody read your books and give you reviews before you officially release them?
I definitely have a few choice friends I send all my work to. They’re always honest, even when it visible hurts me. They’re part of the reason it takes me so long to finish books. I always trying to get the best version of my work out there and, they let me know when I have more work to do.

What was the toughest/best review you have ever had?
Believe it or not , the review for my first book all came verbally or by email. There were none of Amazon. So, in a way that was a tough review. It made me feel like my book wasn’t good enough to even be commented on. Luckily, I got enough high-fives to make me realize I never really promoted Memphis Rain, but I think the worst review a book can receive is none at all.

Would you ever ask a reviewer to change their review if it was not all positive about your book/books?
I think my experiences with my own friends have made that a non-option. Why would I ask someone to change their opinion? You’re words are your truth, if you don’t like, or even hate, my book that’s your truth. I wish it wasn’t, but I’d never disrespect someone for being vulnerable enough to share their truth.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
I personally, really cling to working titles. I have to be able to call my book something. In the end that is normally not what I choose for the finished piece, but it’s really hard for me to work without a title.

Do you basic plot/plan for your book, before you actually begin writing it out? Or do you let the writing flow and see where it takes the story?
I normally know how I want the book to end. Everything else tends to just happen freely. I think knowing the end allows me to think of all the possible ways I could make the book better.

What do you think makes a book a really good/bestseller ?
What makes a book a bestseller? I honestly have no clue, if I did, I would definitely have made a couple bestsellers list by know, and kept the secret to myself so I could be a celebrity in the writing world. No. I’m kidding. I think it all starts with believing in a story. It just a matter of finding an audience that believes in your story too.

Which format of book do you prefer, ebook, hardback, or paperback?
I personally prefer paperback books. Something about being able to hold the pages in my hand and smell the paper makes me want to do my happy dance.

Do you think ebooks will ever totally replace printed books?
There is a distinct possibility ebooks could take over, but I don’t think they will. At least, not, in immediate future. Technology is still that flakey date that forgot you said 7:30 instead of show up whenever. You know what I mean? When you need it most you can’t catch a signal, but that random Monday you could care less your wi-fi is streaming Netflix movies like your life depends on it.

Do you think children at schools these days are encouraged enough to read? Or do Imaginative writing?
I think what is being taught in school today is all relative to the area. I can’t really generalize what’s going on globally but I do think imagination is suffering in schools. Any time cutting the arts in a schools budget seems like a logical move, creativity is bound to suffer. However, I think kids today are so special, in that there’s a push to educate them as individuals. So, there’s hope.

Do you have a treasured book from your childhood?
Oh yeah! The House That Had Enough, was huge deal for me growing up. I mean my mum still reads that book to me and my siblings. I don’t know if it’s my childhood book, I honestly don’t remember, but it’s a huge deal at my house.

What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Don’t be afraid of failure. If people don’t like your book that’s alright. Writing , to me, is about already being the best’ it’s about working to become your best.

Where can readers find you?

You can find me on my blog journeytopaperback.blogspot.com, and, if I ever get over the fact I’m not interesting at all my yet to be created twitter page. Thank you guys so much for having me.
