Destined to destroy empires, Mia Covere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Six years later, the child raised in shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day that she lost everything.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and demons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Red Church is no Hogwarts, but Mia is no ordinary student.

The shadows love her. And they drink her fear.

COVER COMPARE
So two different covers for the same book!
Which do I prefer? And which do YOU prefer?

                                                     A                                 B

Both covers have the same colour scheme on them which consists of black, white and red. Both covers also feature wings. Obviously the book title and author name is the same and appears on both covers and I guess that's where the duplicity ends.

Cover A is for the hardback edition published by Harper Voyager so the UK version and is released on 11th August 2016 here
On this cover the red circle is quite prominent and could represent a moon, sun or maybe it could be taken from the Japanese flag. The other main object on the cover is a large angry looking crow with it's wings wide spread, it's beak wide open possibly screeching and cawing, and its claws extended ready to grab or latch onto something or someone?
The title is in a bold quite block like font with just and extra flick on the V, it is also in white against the red which makes it stand out well. The author name is in black, in a similar but smaller font than the title. There's a byline on this cover which says "Never Flinch, Never Fear, Never Forget" which is catchy and I'd say easily memorable.
Do I like the cover? Yes, I love the stark white with the red and black. I also love the byline, it really encourages you to pick up the book and read the blurb to learn more about the book.
Would the cover make me pick this book up from a bookstore shelf? I find the cover striking and it does draw your eye to it. To be honest I think it would depend upon what else was around it on the shelf. I don't think it would necessarily be the first book I'd grab but I think I'd certainly look at it and read the blurb.

Cover B is for the hardback edition published by Thomas Dunne Books so the US version and is released on 9th August 2016 here
On this cover I'd say the main and most prominent thing on the cover is the mysterious figure that I think is female mentioned in the blurb Mia Covere. The small figure is quite in contrast to the dark feeling the rest of the cover gives off. The girl is holding what looks like a blood coated knife. The shadow of the girl cast on the background of ornate stonework possibly in an old building or mausoleum maybe? is as though the girl has wings . . . or maybe "shadow wings"? The font of the title on this book is a much more elaborate font with lots of swirls and flicks but still red. . . blood red in colour. and situated at the top of the cover. The author name is placed at the bottom of the cover and again is in a black colour and slightly different font to that of the book title. Sadly there is no byline on this book.
Do I like the cover? Yes, the cover is appealing and does draw your attention to it. I think the female on the cover suggests the book is dark and mysterious.
Would the cover make me pick this book up from a bookstore shelf? Hmm, again though I would surely notice I don't know if this would be the first book I would snatch up off the shelf. I think I would end up picking this one up to learn more about the mystery girl on the cover and to red the blurb.

So which cover do I prefer and why?
Well this question is rather more difficult to answer than I thought it would be after I had written what I thought to the individual covers. My favourite elements from Cover A are the byline and the image of the red moon or sun.Whereas my favourite parts of Cover B are the font of the title and the mysterious female. So I guess my perfect Cover would be a mish-mash of both. . . But as I have to pick from these two covers, though I like elements of both . .. . my initial reaction is I would have to choose Cover B but when you read about the different elements I love about each book cover, the result is that I love the most about Cover A!!

So that's my rambling opinion done what do YOU think?
Which Cover would make you snatch the book up from a bookstore shelf?
What elements of each book do you like or dislike?

  1. I prefer B because A kinda looks like the cover of a bunch of other books, such as anything with 'Raven' in the title.

    1. Hi Toinette,
I felt that way about the covers initially and then the more I saw Cover A the more I began to like that one too!

  2. Personally I prefer Cover B. Like you said it's the mysteriousness of the woman on the front which I like the most. Also I like the gray background more than the white :)

By the way, you don't happen to know if there are real differences between the content of them, do you? (Not counting spelling of words). Because I'd rather buy the US version for the cover, but usually prefer British grammar
