A CHAT WITH - SERENA SCHRIEBER MG GI/WAY

Hi,
Serena Schreiber whose book Finn's ship is our Middle Grade Giveaway has dropped by for a MG Themed Chat. So let's get thing's going. . . .

Do you think children at schools these days are encouraged enough to read? and/or do Imaginative writing?
It seems kids have more time to read on their own during school hours than we did. However, with the upcoming up integration of Common Core Standards, one thing that disturbs me is the requirement that 80% of the texts must be non-fiction. As a child, I read very little non-fiction. As a teacher, I applaud this international initiative to raise the level of achievement in our schools. But I'm concerned that the lack of fantasy, science fiction and mysteries will give kids the impression that reading can't be fun.

Did you read a lot at school and write lots of stories or is being a writer something newer in your life?
I've always loved to read and write but never thought of myself as a writer until about five years ago. I decided to take a class. I was hooked.

Did you have a favourite author as a child?

Too many to pick just one, but I loved Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew mysteries), Isaac Asimov (I, Robot), Stephen King (Firestarter), and JRR Tolkien (Lord of the Rings).

Do you have a treasured book from your childhood? If yes, what is it?
Winnie the Pooh

Do you have a favourite genre of book?
If I have to pick just one, fantasy!
