AUTHOR INTERVIEW - EMMA MEADE

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
My name is Emma Meade. I was born in Cork, Ireland and I still live there. Cork is the biggest county in the country, and we Corkonians like to think Cork is the real capital of Ireland, not Dublin!

Do you work another job as well as your writing work?
I have a full time job like a lot of other writers. I work for a small publishing company who publish Irish magazines and directories. I squeeze my writing in at weekends and any evening I’m not feeling too tired or lazy! Of course the dream is to be able to quit the day job and write full time.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
Under the Desert Moon: Erin’s lacklustre small town world suddenly takes an exciting twist with the arrival of a horror movie crew.

What genre would you place your books into?
YA, Paranormal. Under the Desert Moon is a coming of age tale with a dash of the supernatural.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?
I usually just sit on the couch, legs outstretched with my laptop resting on a cushion and start typing. Oh, and a cup of Barry’s tea has to be within arm’s reach.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?
Yes. I often check Goodreads and Amazon. One day I hope I will be able to stop doing this. When you’re an indie author, every bit of publicity helps and every review counts.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Do you have a hobby?
My guilty pleasure is a glass of chilled rosé. That’s usually how I unwind on a Friday evening after a long week’s work, along with a film or some music. Reading and writing are my main hobbies and I head to the cinema with friends for a bit of escapism every week.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is your favourite/worst book to movie transfer?
Sometimes. I think it’s easier to enjoy a film adaptation when you don’t compare it to the book. I like the film version of Twilight. For some reason, I find it very relaxing to watch. Maybe it’s the muted colours and all the rain, very soothing. I also think The Hunger Games did a good job of being faithful to the book.  One film which disappointed me was The Time Traveler’s Wife. I was really looking forward to it since I’d just discovered the book before the film came out, and Rachel McAdams is one of my favourite actresses. I felt it did the book very little justice and seemed more a fluffy romantic drama with a splash of comedy than a bittersweet tragic tale. It just lacked that something special.

Do you think ebooks will ever totally replace printed books?
No. There’s nothing like holding a paperback in your hand or the musty smell of old books. What would we put on our bookshelves if all we had were ebooks?

Do you have a treasured book from your childhood? If yes, what is it?
Any of the Point Horror collection from the 90s. I have dozens of these, most of them original editions with the funky cover art.

Are there any New Authors you are interested in for us to watch out for? and Why should we watch out for them?
I’m recommending L.H Cosway to anyone who will listen these days. She’s an excellent, Irish writer and her novels are some of the best I’ve read this year. Check out Tegan’s Blood and her Florence Vaine series.

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
Deborah Harkness’ Shadow of Night, the paperback. I loved A Discovery of Witches and was expecting great things from the follow up. So far so good. Witches, vampires and a bit of travel time – what’s not to love?

Where can readers follow you?
