The city state of Istonnia is suffering, its people cowering under the thumb of a despotic ruler.
Nivvo, the main character, is a young thief, not interested in anything except keeping himself and his sister Reka alive.
That changes when he accidentally overhears a conversation.
Now Nivvo finds himself up to his neck in trouble.
He has only one night to find the rightful heir. He has to smuggle him out of the city before the tyrant and his black-clad soldiers kill them both.
And he has to avoid the crime lord's watchful eyes, for if Vicco Cambrosi catches them, they might be better off dead.

Ratpaths is a fantasy tale that makes do without magic, and without gods, elves, dragons, vampires or other mythical creatures, leaving the characters to get by on their wits alone, together with a little luck.
In recent reviews, it has been described as a rich and vivid world, filled with believable and memorable characters.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Angelika Rust is the author of Ratpaths, a fantasy novel in a mafia setting.
She's currently writing the sequel, the odd short story and a stand-alone novel about the comical effects of depression.
Born in Vienna in 1977, she now lives in Germany, with her husband, two children, a grumpy old cat and a hyperactive dog.

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
My name is Angelika Rust, I was born in Vienna, Austria. These days I live in Germany.

When did you first consider yourself as a "writer"?
Probably in April 2013. That was when I joined authonomy, an online writers' community. I uploaded a few chapters, expecting the members to tear them apart, but they didn't. Instead, they treated me as an equal. It's hard not to take yourself seriously when others do.

Do you work another job as well as your writing work?
I'm a part time English teacher and a full time mom.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
The book's name is Ratpaths. It's the story of a young thief caught between the machinations of the rightful regent and the resident crime lord.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
I'm writing the sequel at the moment, and a novella about the more or less amusing (and fantastic) side effects of depression.

What genre would you place your books into?

Fantasy.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?
I've read a great many fantasy books over the years, but too many of them had featured too much magic, gods or other forms of deus ex machina. I wanted to supply the genre with a story where the characters needed to get by on their wits alone, together with a little luck.

Do you have a favourite character from your books? and why are they your favourite?

Fortunately for me, my favorite character is Nivvo, my main character. People tell me it's difficult to judge whether he's very brave, or simply a bit mad. The latter wouldn't be a surprise - it's running in the family, after all. He's probably both. I call him 'one spark short of a bonfire'.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?
Coffee. I need coffee. And preferably peace and quiet.

Do you have anybody read your books and give you reviews before you officially release them?ie. Your partner, children, friends, reviewers you know?
I have a few trusted friends and a few other writers who are kind enough to read and review the various draft stages. Their input is invaluable, and I wouldn't want to go without.

How do you come up with the Title and Cover Designs for your book/books?Who designed the Cover of your books?
For Ratpaths, the title just popped into my head somewhere halfway through the writing process. Same with the cover idea. I did a rough draft of the cover myself. David Korson did the final cover. He's amazing. We hardly need to talk about what I want. I give him a vague idea, and he turns it into precisely what I'd visualized. He's already done the cover for the sequel, too.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?
I always have a very clear picture of how I want a character to be. And I take care the characters act accordingly. I'd rather change the plot to accomodate a character than make a character do something he wouldn't, just for the sake of the plot.

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
I'm currently reading Max China's The Sister. It's a mystery thriller, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I generally prefer paperback, but I bought this one as an ebook, because it's not yet available as a paperback and I wanted to read it now, not wait for the paperback release.

Do you have a treasured book from your childhood? If yes, what is it?
The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende. I'm reading it to my own kids now. It's still wonderful, even if you're fully grown.

Are there any New Authors you are interested in for us to watch out for? and Why should we watch out for them?
Many. The world is full of talented people. I'll give you my current three favorites - Jesamine James, James Cassidy and Adam Oster. All three of them manage to pull you right into their world, and not let you go for a long time. Their books are haunting you. You'll miss your bus stop when reading them.

If you could invite three favourite writers to dinner, who would you invite and enjoy chatting with?
Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. Sadly, this will never happen.
