She backed up.
“Why are you here?”
“I’m here to help you.”
She swayed, her eyes blinking rapidly.
He reached for her, his elbow accidentally hitting the shelving behind him. Her pictures rattled. One fell, shattering on the floor.
She jumped, her gaze following the picture to the ground.
His gaze followed hers. Oh, shit.
She bent down, lifted the picture of a younger Elizabeth up off the floor. Her hands were shaking.
He wanted to hold them. To steady them.
“I can’t do this again,” she whispered.
Yes, you can. But the damn words were stuck.
Moving around him, she placed the picture on the shelf. Broken glass shards fell onto the floor at his feet.
Her body was putting off heat. Feverish heat.
“I won’t do this again. Please leave, Joshua.” She grabbed his hand, jerking him toward the door.
He let her lead him.
“I have to focus. I need to be here for Elizabeth. I have to call Jackie’s parents back. Work is calling me every five minutes.”
The doctor in him kicked in, recognizing her rant, feeling her warm fingers, seeing the sweat bubbling on her shiny forehead. He needed to calm her down, lower her blood pressure, before she hyperventilated and passed out again.
“I don’t know what to do. Do I take Elizabeth to the ER? Do I just watch her myself? How do I even explain to a doctor—”
Distract her.
Joshua shifted his weight, gently shifting the power, then carefully pushed her until her back hit the wall.
Her eyes widened, and her mouth parted.
He leaned in.
Her hot breath hit his skin.
His body responded. Jesus. What was wrong with him? He was so close to her. That’s what was wrong. No, this is what’s finally right.
She knew what was coming—he could see it in her eyes, the way her pupils were dilating. They’d been here many times before. The mad make-up following one of their fierce fights.
She wasn’t pulling away. She was looking up at him, her body still, her breathing fast and shallow, waiting for him to make a move.
His heart leapt. He wanted to distract her by planting his lips on hers.
Her body relaxed, and her arms slipped around his neck, as they’d done so many times before.
He put his hands on her backside and pulled her up into him, loving the feeling of her heart beating against his chest once again. “It will all be okay. I promise.” He pressed his lips to her neck, feeling the blood racing through her artery.

REVIEW
After reading the prequel Burning, I had a good idea I would be wanting to read this whole series to the very end so after finishing Falling I was desperate to read this one Reckoning. I have to say I think all these books have very apt titles that fit the individual places the books are within the whole series, story. I also love each and every cover in this series so far too.

Reckoning picks up right where Falling left off, its literally like flicking over the page within the story as it continues. I really can’t avoid a spoiler here so if you haven’t read up to the ending of Falling please stop reading this review now! At the end of Falling, Wren was chosen to go inside of the lab to Dex despite knowing her father intended on killing everyone that had disagreed and refused to declare themselves followers of Ronan/Cy. Wren has never been so scared for her life, yet at the same time she doesn’t regret coming into the lab to be with Dex, even though it looks like she is going to die with him. Again, a bit spoilery, but with help from Phoenix, Kian and Nova first Wren, then other Askalan’s are rescued from the lab inferno. Dex brining up the rear with the precious laptop that contains all the ancesteral Askalan information. Sadly a few people refuse to trust that there is a way out of the burning lab and perish. Wren finds it difficult to come to terms with the fact her father Ronan/Cy allowed her to perish in a fire he started. The lab survivors are ushered to the forest to hideaway from Cy and his men. Wren and Phoenix are re-introduced to Avis and it goes better for one of the siblings than the other. Sadly Wren decides the only way forward, to get inside information on Cy and his men is to go back and pretend she is sorry. Unfortunately it turns out that Wren doesn’t know her father quite as well as she thought and is put through a gruesome punishment that ensures she will never forget her fathers treatment of her again. Cy also announces that she is going to produce an heir for him. He demands she be paired up with one of his trusted men and give him a grandson. At least there is a little luck left for Wren when she is paired with a fairly decent man who doesn’t wholly agree with Cy’s treatment of Wren or the Askalan people. Just when you think all is lost and the Alaskan natives have no chance at all against Cy’s men and their flamethrowers, help arrives in the form of Dean and his new Outlander army. Dean and his men can fight and will be an asset but what will they want in return for their “help”? Phoenix helps to “train” the Askalan people as best he can with people that have never been, nor wish to be violent towards others.

I won’t go into further detail or spoilers but there is a lot going on in this book. The person who maimed Dex and killed Mercy is revealed along with the reason they did it which has both devastating and drastic consequences. Magnus once the strength of Askala makes a strange choice that his son, Kian, struggles to come to terms with.
A lot of parent/child relationships dramatically change, with both Phoenix and Wren being shocked by how harsh their father Cy can and has been in the past, but when it comes to his life or death what do his children do? Phoenix and Wren also have totally different feelings and attitudes when they meet Avis a face from their past. Phoenix seems to be the one that adapts much quicker to changes where as Wren is much slower at realising the truth of the past and coming around to forgiveness. Both Avis and Wren end up having to face their deepest fears.

I’m not sure how to explain it other than to say this series is really deep, and multi layered, and there similarities that happen within each different generation, for example, earlier in the series there is the relationship between Magnus and Callix who both work for what they believe is the right thing for Askala. Though when it comes down to it the High Bound and the High Bound Leader Magnus has the largest influence. Also Magnus and Callix are positive and are cautious, whereas Ronan who is banished and later changes his name is a negative, impulsive person who puts everyone in danger. Then later in the series and in this book there is a similar relationship between Kian and Dex, however Kian listens more to the opinions of others than Magnus ever did. Where Magnus is all about the good of Askala no matter the cost, Kian is more concerned about the people of Askala and their survival, as without the people there is no Askala. Both Kian and Dex are positive influencers on Askala and it future, where Dean a relative of Ronan is the more negative impulsive person, who acts first and thinks later.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book was another great book in the amazing After The Thaw series. What will the future bring for Luca, Hawk, Sam, Mercy, Robin and Dove? What dangers will they have to face? The earth seems to be regenerating and finding a way to renew itself and become better but will all humans renew their outlook? Will they want to work hard and live in peace? Or will there still be humans who turn up to threaten the peace of Askala and its people?

To sum up once again I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though at first it had a “different” feel to it, but I quickly slipped back into the world with the great characters. The only thing I kind of would have changed was we didn’t have the “Five Years later” section at the end of this book I think I maybe would have preferred it at the beginning of the next book. Having said that I adore this series and am looking forward to seeing what direction the Askalan’s will be heading next.

Smart heeled boots pounded hard pavements soon hit softer ground as they reached the park. For late morning it bore empty. Those who used it to organise school quicker were already there, and the dawn few who walked dogs had come and gone before the two friends surfaced from a beaten footpath to look over their shoulders and see David trip, pick himself up, and go after them even faster.
“This way!” hailed Toni, smartly cutting round a small brick building in to crammed bushes and long thick grass.
Staying low whilst moving quiet, they anticipated David’s follow but did not expect him to come from the opposite direction and cut them off halting Toni in her tracks thus causing Rebecca to cannon in to the back of her.
The two stood breathing hard watching David breathing hard and pointing at Toni.
“What are you running for?” he said contentiously, “I waited for you yesterday, where the hell were you?”
She found herself shaken by his words. Does he not remember what he did?
“You know we always meet up at six, where the hell were you, Toni?”
   She stood astonished.
“I said, where were you, I waited for you, I could have been with my bloody mates?!”
She swallowed strong, trying not to believe this moment, trying not to believe him.
“What have you got to say to me?”
Her legs swaddled derelict because if he got any closer, it spelled her collapse. She opened her mouth to say something, shout, swear, berate him, anything to give him the message they were through however Rebecca dived first, and what she said brought no respite to their unforgiving plight.
“You’ve got some nerve, why don’t you leave her alone?”
He mushroomed the friend his eyes. “Are you asking me or telling me, Hayes?”
Anger and disgust could not be disguised, “I’m telling you,” she said vividly, “I’m telling you to leave Toni alone, okay!”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hello all, at Jeanz Book, Read N Review.

I’m author, L Penn, telling you a bit about me and my thought-provoking novel, Spilling Blood.

Born in Leicestershire, UK, I began writing in the 80’s bashing away at keyboards on an old typewriter creating stories which challenged the norm. I’m a writer of books that “grab you by the throat and sling you up against the wall”, as one reviewer put it about my second novel, Missing Him: A real love story.

Never one for run-of-the-mill fiction, I pen books with burning passion as you can gather from my contentious storylines. I finished my first feature aged 15 and continued writing till I turned 24, then fell away with life at my heels only to resurge decades later; hence a refreshed, Spilling Blood.

I won’t preach about writing or how to do it art but if you’ve got a story to tell then tell it well. Read it over and over and visit it again weeks later because only you will know if you’ve got it right.

I enjoy works which feature smart, unconventional females and during the 80’s, my mum’s best friend Shirley (who sadly passed of cancer), showed grit and determination during heavily prejudiced times. She placed herself above the parapet challenging anything unjust, so I watched and I listened.

Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on but if there isn’t one available, then create characters on whose shoulders you can.

Hoping I did that with Spilling Blood, it’s a book for readers prepared to step out of their comfort zones and discover an emotive ride. So, for a brave story that doesn’t pull any punches, let protagonists Toni and Rebecca become your characters and experience the shocking journey they take you on.

Thanks for sharing, and happy reads everyone!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Could you tell us a little bit about your book, Spilling Blood (in 20 words or less)?
Spilling Blood is a challenging story of abuse and revenge where victims take back control of their lives.

How did you get your ideas for Spilling Blood?
I’d read about crimes where perpetrators weren’t being punished and thought, what if victims took the law in to their own hands?

How long did it take you to write Spilling Blood?
It took me around ten months between finishing my full-time bricklaying apprenticeship (back in 1989) and writing at weekends.

Did you have to do a lot of research for Spilling Blood?
To be honest, no. I’m the kind of writer who imagines characters in a setting and after scribbling a few pages the story takes off. I didn’t plot Spilling, it wrote itself, which is why I think it’s such a powerful book.

Have you based any of the book characters on people you know?
I’m happy to say I didn’t due to the nature of the story yet I feel the characters are people we all know.

What can we expect from you next and in the future?
My next book is about a female bouncer which I’m currently editing and you can expect more hard-hitting stories of everyday people overcoming adversity.

Where can your readers follow you?

THE IRON DOVE OF THE FRONTIER...

LouIsa: Iron Dove of the Frontier is a story about a tough, but well-educated genteel woman of quiet strength who, when it became necessary, could get down and dirty and fight as adeptly as the best gutter rats. Prologue
Tombstone, Arizona, March 18, 1882.

The pistol roared, the assailant heard Morgan cry out, “What the hell…?” and then saw him fall face down on the pool table.
“We finally got you, you law dawg son of a bitch.” Pete Spencer stood trembling outside the poolroom, the smoking gun still in his hand as he uttered the words quietly to himself.
Before he made his escape, he glanced through the window at the stunned crowd. His action had caught them completely off guard. Not one of them suspected what he might be up to when he quietly removed himself from the poolroom earlier that evening.
With two people on each side of his collapsed body, they carefully lifted Morgan off the pool table and laid him on his back on the floor.
“Go fetch LouIsa,” one of them said. Another said, “Better get Wyatt and Virgil too, and the Doc. I don’t think Morgan has much of a chance of makin’ it, but he’s still alive and needs a doc.”
*****
Louisa was cradling Morgan’s head in her lap when Wyatt entered the room. He knelt beside his brother; his vision blurred from the tears that welled in his eyes. He blinked to fight them back; his gut wrenched. When his eyes finally focused, he looked around the room.
“Who did this?” he asked. “Did anyone see who did the actual shooting?”
One man spoke up and said, “I didn’t actually see the shootin’, but I did see Pete Spencer leave the poolroom about a half hour before Morgan was shot.”
“Come to think about it,” said another, I saw the little weasel sneak out of here m’self.”
“But none of you actually saw Spencer fire the shot,” Wyatt said. It was more of a statement than a question. They all agreed, none could swear to seeing the shooting.
Wyatt looked at LouIsa. He agonized at the pain he saw in her eyes, and the tortured expression on her face. He sensed she was in another time, another place. He reached out and lightly touched her shoulder.
LouIsa looked up at him. Again, he saw her pain. “Come, LouIsa,” he said, “I’ll have someone escort you home.
She heard nothing of what he said. She was aware only of her own thoughts. She continued to hug her husband and rub his face softly with her hand, her mind engulfed in her own private thoughts.
Why, Morgan, why? You said you would hang up your guns if I accompanied you to Tombstone. Why couldn’t you have stayed out of the law business like you promised? If you had stuck to prospecting or gambling, this would never have happened. But when you saw the lawlessness that was here, I guess I should’ve known better than to think that you could let it stand without trying to do something about it. And then worst of all, my darling, you forgot the last thing I told you before you walked out of the house tonight. ‘Don’t turn your back on anyone.’
She nestled him closer to her bosom. Morgan had been unconscious the whole time and knew nothing of what she had been thinking. She heard a gurgle come from his throat and felt him give one last desperate gasp for air. She realized he had just died in her lap.
She loved this man who lay in her lap more than life itself. She had only longed to devote herself to living for one man building a life with him and raising a family in a little cabin with flowers and a white picket fence. Her health had prevented her from having a family, and now the rest of her dream had just been shattered by an assassin’s bullet.
LouIsa was part Cherokee Indian, and it was now that she needed the inner strength that her Cherokee grandmother had instilled in her. She never let LouIsa forget that part of her heritage as she taught her the ways of her people. Cherokee life was hard; their women had to be strong.

LouIsa broke into a soft wailing of the mourning song of her Cherokee people, and as she mourned her husband’s death, she relived the last several years.

Comments From the Author
We all have stories from our youth we like to tell our offspring. I used to tell some of these stories to my family at the dinner table or in the car while traveling on family trips. After much cajoling from my family members, I finally acquiesced and decided to share some of these stories with you the reader.

Excerpted From the Prologue

….I sat at my word processor putting to paper some of my boyhood experiences. I began by describing to my readers the era in which the stories were set and telling something of the country where I grew up.  The adventures that follow are fiction based on real events in my own life.  They are written from memory as best I can recollect after the passage of nearly sixty years.  As it is with any storyteller, I have embellished where I felt embellishment was necessary to add interest.
The characters are based on real people who were part of my life during this period.  Some of the given names have remained unchanged.  The surnames, wherever used, are fictitious or are used fictitiously.

The Trials and Treasures of Buddy Crawford, I wrote, is a compilation of adventures in the life of a small boy in a simpler bygone era of ten-cent movie tickets, five-cent Coca-Colas, penny licorice sticks, five-cent Hershey bars, and ten-cent double-dip ice cream cones. These stories are set in a farming valley in the southeastern Idaho highlands during the 1940s.  It is an era in America’s history when a rural town with a population of five hundred people—give or take ten—could  support most of the services needed to sustain a full life.
State Highway 34 ran straight through the middle of Buddy’s hometown; within the town’s borders, it made up Main Street.  Beginning at the north end, if you were to stroll down this street in the 1940s, the first building you would see would be the movie theater, where kids could buy a ticket for a dime and their parents could buy one for fifteen cents.
Next to the theater you would find one of the town pool halls where men—young and old—congregated to play cards, shoot pool, and discuss the latest news concerning the war.  You would hear some singing President Roosevelt’s praises while others called him a warmonger who got the country into a war only to bolster the economy.

Moving on down the street you would come to a café and then the drugstore.  The drugstore was one of Buddy’s favorite places to hang out because it had a soda fountain.  If you had lived in those days, you would remember that soda fountains usually had gray marble countertops and wire-backed stools.  You would remember that fountain clerks were known as “soda jerks” because they mixed drinks right in the glass using various flavored syrups and carbonated water from the fountain.  You would also remember that hand-dipped ice cream was the main ingredient in thick creamy malts and milkshakes, ice cream sun dies, root beer floats, and twin-scoop ice cream cones.
Along the remainder of Main Street in Buddy’s little town was another pool hall, another café, Roghaars’s general mercantile, a clothing store, a five-and-dime store, two grocery stores, a liquor store, a blacksmith shop, and three car agencies. On one of the side streets were two farm implement dealerships, another blacksmith shop, a doctor, and a dentist.  The town also supported two churches.
Last, but not least, there was a local attorney who was nearly poverty-stricken,
because most people in those days settled their own grievances using common sense.  His busiest time seemed to be when he would rescue the town wino from jail every Monday morning, or when he would file divorce papers for Mrs. Walton—she’d file a complaint against her husband once a month and then later withdraw it.
Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Mix, and Gene Autry were the matinee idols of the day.  Lux Radio Theater, Bing Crosby, Kate Smith, Amos ‘n’ Andy, Fibber McGee and Molly, Blondie and Dagwood, The Great Gildersleeve, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, and Bob Hope were the mainstay entertainers on the radio.  And America was at war on the other side of the world.
On the whole, Buddy was a happy kid who enjoyed his boyhood days growing up in this tiny rural town in southeast Idaho, in spite of the times when bigger kids would tease him, or when the school bully would pick on him, or when he got into trouble with his parents, as most boys do.  But Buddy overcame with no lasting scars.  His summers were spent fishing, swimming, bike riding, horse-back riding, playing baseball, and going to the farm with Dad.
Come, journey back in time and join Buddy in … His Trials and Treasures.
