However, her definition of “normal” unravels when a killer with multiple powers and an agenda steps into town. When Rosamund herself becomes a target, she has a choice between playing the killer’s game and saving a few, or getting to the core of the murders and stopping them for good.

Rosamund’s choice will save everyone she cares about–or unleash a new era for herself and her family, shattering whatever hope for going back to normal she had.

EXCERPT

And I tried. And tried. But it wasn’t working and it wasn’t for lack of focus. I simply couldn’t completely form one. Then it struck me that my portals were a kind of door. Could a shield block that too?

The door at the top of the stairs creaked open. First, I froze, then fled deeper into the kitchen, ignoring the cobwebs and dirt and folded up into one of the bottom cabinets. How long would it take her to find me there? Seconds? If I couldn’t create a portal, how was I supposed to survive this? I had no defenses, my phone just terminated by itself, and nobody knew where I was. Perfect.

I held my breath, trying to talk myself down from the mounting panic attack. Maybe this was some sort of special drill. A test of what I would do under the scariest circumstances ever. But then why would Bryce call and tell me I wasn’t with my mother? He wouldn’t be in on it and I couldn’t think of any reason for him to lie about that.

I stopped thinking and focused on outside sounds. I picked up on a faint scraping, like shoe soles on a hard floor. It suddenly stopped and I covered my mouth with both hands to block my breathing and prevent myself from screaming.

“Rosamund?” I heard whispered in a low, raspy voice.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’ve always loved stories. From bedtime tales my parents told me about their childhood (over and over again) to the Berenstain Bears, I lived to hear the next story.
So I guess it’s not surprising that I came up with my own stories and started putting them on paper as soon as I could write. I remember carting notebooks with me to school and working whenever I had the chance (some things don’t really change). Later, I branched out into poetry and plays and experimental works, but I always came back to stories.
Weirdly enough, even though I loved mysteries and sci-fi/fantasy, I focused on writing literary short stories for several years. But everything changed when I wrote my first novel as a challenge in 2009. Not only was it a novel, but it was also a mystery (actually, it’s what became The Jester’s Apprentice). I was hooked, and over the last few years, novel writing has grown into a full-time pursuit. (According to my sister, I talk waaayyy too much to write short stories.)

Beyond writing, I’m a Massachusetts native with strong ties to the Rhode Island coast, and I love to bake, watch movies, and tackle graphic/web design projects.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
My name is Ian McCrae, I was born in Virginia Beach, VA and I currently reside in Ellicott City MD

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I was always interested in expressing myself creatively. I wrote short stories as a child, wrote lyrics and musical compositions as a teen into my 20's, and most recently my novel

Did it take a long time to get your first book published?
From the start of writing to completion of publishing took about 16 months

Do you work another job as well as your writing work?
I owned a carpentry business in Virginia for 8 years and I now own a residential cleaning company. If memory serves, a well known author once said, "The greatest literature comes from those who do not rely on it for their daily bread", or words to that effect

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
The Second Wager, loosely based on my life, either the events or the emotions I felt at times

Do you have a favourite character from your books? and why are they your favourite? Phobos, to be sure. He is what I aspire to be.

Do you have anybody read your books and give you reviews before you officially release them?ie. Your partner, children, friends, reviewers you know?
My wife read my book before it was published, as well as my sister, who is an avid reader

How do you come up with the Title and Cover Designs for your book/books?Who designed the Cover of your books?
The title is a play on Blaise Pascal's "Pascal's Wager", while I designed the cover using graphic art provided by the publishing company I used

Do you basic plot/plan for your book, before you actually begin writing it out? Or do you let the writing flow and see where it takes the story?
I knew how the book would end quite specifically, and there were bits and pieces that I had mapped out, but for the most part I let the writing take a natural, autonomous flow. When I started writing it, I imagined it being a short story, and it simply kept going

How do you market/promote your books?
At first I wasn't really concerned with marketing. It wasn't don't for monetary gain. Later though, I wanted to at least attempt to see if it could appeal to a larger group

Have you ever based characters on people you know or based events on things that have happened to you?
The characters in my book were almost entirely based on people I know. Rassimus represented me, whereas all those that played a positive role in his life and improved him as a man, Ceren, Delby, and most importantly Phobos, represented my wife

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")
Most of the moral implications are rather direct, I believe. People rarely see just how broken they are, and love is often times the only way to repair the damage

What is your favourite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?
It's a tie between The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. I've read both twice. Dostoevsky was a master at conveying the inner torment of a character, and making you feel that torment with them

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
A client of mine was part of the legal team of one of the Watergate defendants. He wrote a book about the trial and I'm currently reading that. It certainly has my interest. It's in the ebook format.

Do you have a favourite genre of book?
I'm actually a big sci-fi fan, Star Trek and Star Wars being my favorite

If you could invite three favourite writers to dinner, who would you invite and enjoy chatting with?

Dostoevsky, Gogol (just to find out the full story of Dead Souls), and John Milton

In The Jewel, we followed Violet in her servitude under the Duchess of the Lake. Now we'll hear Raven's story and her time as a surrogate for the Countess of the Stone in this digital novella from Amy Ewing.

When Raven is bought at the Auction, she knows immediately that things will not go well. And when she arrives at the Countess's palace, Raven quickly discovers that the Countess is much less interested in having a baby than experimenting with Raven's mind and body. Raven can only hope for an escape…and to see Violet again, all the while reminding herself that she is Raven Stirling, and she does matter.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
Looking forward to reading this one, perhaps it will answer some of the questions I have about Raven from BK#2. I know I am actually reading this novella out of order, but I hope that won't spoil my enjoyment of it too much!

MY REVIEW
I bought this novella from Amazon UK when it was just 99p, which I guess is an okay price for a novella, dependent on it's length and content.
The cover that I  have chosen to feature is my favourite out of the two covers that I have seen. The cover is a clean luxurious mirror like background, with the title in an opulent gold colour with some artistic swirls and flicks within it. The cover also features the series title in a plainer standard font at the top of the cover. There is also the byline that becomes like a mantra to Raven during the novella which is "I am Raven Stirling. They cannot own me."
So would the cover make me pick this book up from a shelf in a book store? Yes, it would attract me eye.
This novella is focused on Raven Stirling or Lot 192 in the auction. The book starts from the point that the girls are all at the auction in the waiting room and basically covers the auctioning of her, rather like in The Jewel we went through the auction seeing it all through the eyes of Violet.  The last words Violet and Raven exchange are that they will never forget each other. It's quite likely that they will never see each other again, never mind get the chance to speak to each other. Naturally as Violet was scared whilst standing around in the waiting room, so is Raven. Raven may be scared and nervous but she is determined not to show her fear when she appears on the auction stage. Raven's way of coping is to attempt to stare the women right in the eyes. One woman catches Raven's eye, a large woman who seem's so fat Raven is shocked that she can fit into the tight black satin dress she is wearing. The woman see's Raven looking at her and smiles slightly as Raven stares at her in the eye. It's such a chilling icy smile Raven visibly shudders as she hopes that the woman she is looking at doesn't buy her.  Raven has a phrase she continue's to repeat in her head "I am Raven Stirling. They cannot own me".  So the auctioneer begins by listing Raven's lot number and her statistics, including her augury scores, and then the bidding begins at two hundred thousand diamante's, from The Lady of the Line. Raven is shocked at such a high starting bid amount. Raven also notices that the woman in the tight black satin dress also bids, so Raven learns the woman is called The Countess of the Stone, which means she is from one of the founding houses. The bidding goes higher and higher, The Countess of Stone is bidding hard and high, she seem's determined. The lazy way she waves her bidding rods seem's like she is prepared to pay a high price for Raven. Whilst the bidding goes on and on Raven thinks back to the happy times that she had shared with Violet at Southgate. Suddenly the word "SOLD!"" breaks into Raven's dreaming, the voice continues "Sold for three million five hundred thousand diamante's to the Countess of Stone!" Of all the people to have bought Raven it was the one she desperately didn't want to be bought by. Raven is lowered through the floor down into the bare concrete room under the stage.
The novella goes on to tell how Raven is treat by the Countess of the Stone, kept in  horrid conditions to begin with. The only chink of light being when she is taken out to a dinner and gets to see Violet. Raven soon learns what an evil woman her new mistress is, and her warped henchman Frederick. The one person who shows Raven a sliver of kindness is Emile and to begin with Raven refuses his help and healing creams. Raven soon realises that Emile may be the only ally she has and tell's him her name, though he still call's her 192. What Frederick and the Countess of the Stone just refer to her as "it". We get another point of view from Raven on the fact that surrogates are put on a leash, like some sort of animals or pets. This is a novella but it contains so much I feel I could go on and on about this novella!
So did I enjoy this novella? I totally adored it. I can honestly say that reading the novella out of it's specified order in the series in no way affected my total enjoyment of this novella. It was really enlightening to see how differently Raven was treated in comparison to Violet. I do admit that as soon as Raven revealed the fact she wished to be bought by anyone but the Countess of the Stone I just knew that she was sure to be bought by the woman she was most afraid of.
Would I recommend the novella? Definitely, if you love The Jewel, then this novella is a must read!
Would I want to read another book/novella in this series? Definitely, I have also read The White Rose BK2 and wow I thought I loved The Jewel but The White Rose is a totally amazing, action packed, shocking all at the same time.
Would I want to read other titles by this author? I would take a look at anything written by this author, I seriously enjoy her writing style. Amy Ewing gets a good grip on you at the beginning of this series in the Jewel and that hold becomes tighter and tighter the more you read in the series. I cannot wait for the next book or novella in this series. totally addictive reading!

A young woman's journey of discovery takes her to a world of forbidden passion, savage beauty, and revenge.

Spring, 1950. Alexandra de Falla, a half-English, half-Spanish young writer abandons her privileged but suffocating life in London and travels to Spain to be reunited with her long-estranged family.

Among the strange characters and sultry heat of this country, she meets the man who awakens emotions she hardly knew existed. But their path is strewn with obstacles: dangerous rivals, unpredictable events, and inevitable indiscretions. What does Alexandra's destiny hold for her in this flamboyant land of drama and all-consuming passions, where blood is ritually poured on to the sands of sun-drenched bullfighting arenas, mysterious gypsies are embroiled in magic and revenge, and beautiful dark-eyed dancers hide their secrets behind elegant lacy fans?

EXCERPT

For the week leading up to the masked ball, confusion had reigned on the ground floor at El Pavón. Servants had shifted out furniture, rolled up carpets, prepared tables for the buffet in the dining room, and chandeliers, wall sconces, columns and cornices had been decorated with garlands of bright roses interspersed with jasmine and orange blossom from the garden. As the evening began, and the sweeping strings of ballroom music filled the hacienda, El Pavón seemed transformed into a magical palace.
Although the ball was in full swing as dusk gave way to night, cars were still arriving. They stopped at the foot of the stairs with a rasp of gravel and young drivers in dark-grey suits and caps leapt out to open the doors.
In the garden, an array of colourful lanterns hung from arbours, dangled between fruit trees, encircling the fountains and pools, twinkling with light. While in the great ballroom, overlooking the east-facing gardens, Doña María Dolores’ guests, attired in all sorts of disguises, drank, joked and glided happily on the polished oak dancefloor.
The ballroom was long and rectangular, taking up the entire length of the house. At each end, French doors opened out on to terraces stocked with exotic plants. Down one side, more windows led to the wide green lawn at the side of the hacienda. High mirrors hung between the windows, framed with gilded beading. Supported on marble columns was a gallery with a wrought-iron balustrade where musicians in evening dress were playing romantic dance melodies from tangos to Viennese waltzes.
Alexandra paused on the threshold of the vast room, a trifle overwhelmed by the grand spectacle. All the guests wore masks of velvet, satin or lace, giving them a mysterious air. She watched for a moment as Ondine, Goddess of the Northern Seas, leant against a column, lost in a dream, her head slightly tilted to one side. In her long tunic of turquoise silk sprinkled with iridescent sequins, she appeared to have just risen from the depths of the ocean, her beautiful golden hair draped gracefully about her bare shoulders. A torero in black silk breeches, drawn in at the hips, with a waistcoat brocaded with silk, knee-length stockings and shiny flat shoes, gazed at her. Just as he had decided to approach, another gallant figure, Oreste, bearing his father’s sword in his belt, swooped in first and, bowing deeply before her, drew her on to the dancefloor. They passed a maharani wearing a magnificent sari of dark gold brocade, who was walking towards the veranda arm-in-arm with a American Indian in a headdress of multi-coloured feathers and a jacket of brown suede.
A hand tapped Alexandra’s shoulder. Startled, she turned, almost bumping into a couple of waiters carrying trays laden with appetizing tapas and small glasses of fino sherry. The intruder was a musketeer in a wide soft hat, loose breeches and a leather doublet. A black mask hid his twinkling eyes but she recognized the beaming smile.
‘Well, Cousin,’ he said cheerfully, ‘I didn’t have to search very long to find the most beautiful girl at the ball. I told you I could spot you under any disguise.’
She smiled at Ramón, happy to find a friend in this sea of masked strangers, but it was difficult to concentrate on what he was saying. Her eyes were scouring the dancefloor, eagerly scrutinizing the whirling couples from behind her velvet mask. What, or more precisely who, was she looking for, exactly? After all, she knew nothing of the mysterious Conde, except that he had a deep and seductive voice. Recalling it made her pulse run faster and her knees slightly weak. Could the peculiar episode at Mascaradas have been merely a foolish jest designed to mystify her? Surely Old Jaime would not have taken part in a practical joke? She started with indignation at the idea she might be the victim of some prank. Yet, the more she thought about it, the more that seemed improbable. It would be an expensive joke to play, after all. No, the sheer cost of her beautiful costume had to be proof of the generosity and admiration of her romantic stranger.
As the evening progressed and there was still no sign of the mysterious Conde, Alexandra was forced to admit that she must have been the victim of a practical joke. It was gone eleven o’clock, surely he would have shown up by now if he was going to? Putting aside her disappointment, she told herself it had all been merely a captivating puzzle, one that had fired her romantic imagination and aroused her yearning for adventure, nothing more. At least she had some ideas for her new hero, she reminded herself, and decided to enter fully into the festive spirit, now that she had given up on her elusive stranger.
She didn’t notice the oriental prince, wearing a costume similar in style and colour to her own, observing her quizzically from a far-off corner of the room.
A pierrot in a black-and-white silk suit with a collar of pleated tulle and a bonnet decorated with black pompons asked Alexandra for a dance. She allowed him to move her around the dancefloor, with only half an ear on the eager conversation he was making as she took in the sea of colourful guests. It was almost midnight. Don Felipe was paying court to a shepherdess in a crinoline gown. Further along the room Mercedes, disguised as a bluebell, wearing a crown of tiny blue flowers and a dress with a bodice of green velvet and an organdie skirt, with petals of periwinkle blue, was squabbling with Electra, who was sulking in a corner. Isis and Osiris were discussing something with a pretty redhead in Savoy costume.
Alexandra was once again aware of the pierrot, who drew her closer to him. ‘Soon it will be midnight,’ he whispered into her ear, ‘and the lights will go out—’
‘Excuse me señor, I’ve come to collect my wife,’ interrupted a deep, warm voice. Alexandra smothered a gasp. Her heart gave such a jolt she thought it might leap out of her mouth.
The first notes of a Strauss waltz began. Before she could recover, the stranger swung Alexandra into his arms, holding her so tightly to him she was unable to lift her head to see his face. The blood pounded in her veins. She was conscious of his strong, sinuous length against her and the turmoil of her own body as his warmth soaked into her, adding to the heat welling up inside her like a furnace. Her temple brushed against his jaw; his skin was smooth. He smelled of soap, mint and tobacco, indefinably masculine. As they twirled around the dancefloor, Alexandra was carried away by an overpowering tide that left her light-headed, almost breathless. It was as though she were under a spell, a bewitching charm of the mind and senses that had no place in the dictionary of her experience.
Eventually, the giddy whirlwind ended and they found themselves on the terrace. In contrast to the brightly lit ballroom they had left, it was bathed in an almost unreal, diaphanous light from the moon and the glowing lanterns in the trees. They waltzed in silence for a few more minutes, taking in the melancholy softness of the night.
‘I owe you an apology for stepping in just now but I could see no other way of tearing you away from the arms of your too-forward partner,’ he said, in those same ardent, deep tones that had so haunted Alexandra over the past few days.
She caught her breath, unable to reply immediately and all the while hoping he wasn’t aware of the urgent beating of her heart. He still held on to her firmly and she could only look up at him with a smile. The moon disappeared behind a cloud, shadowing his features.
The stranger was almost a head taller than Alexandra. Under his light cloak she could see that his costume was very much like hers. It was in a similar cloth of pure, ivory-coloured silk, yet less decorated. His head was clad in a plain turban, which entirely concealed his hair. In the wide faja, the silk band that clasped his waist, he had placed a navaja, much like the ones Alexandra had noticed at the station in Puerto de Santa María on the day of her arrival, the difference being his was set with genuine precious stones. His shoulders were broad; his embrace firm and close.
As a shaft of moonlight fell briefly on his face, Alexandra’s heart missed a beat. In spite of the half-shadow and the narrow mask shielding his tanned features, she recognized the stranger she had seen on the seafront and then in the Church of Santa María: the man on the prayer stool who had so deeply disturbed her. So it was the same man after all. One man who now made something inside her thrill deliciously at his nearness.
Somewhere far off, a clock struck midnight. An owl hooted, as if in response. The air was fragrant with the sweet smell of jasmine and orange blossom. Masks fell and shouts of joy burst from all sides under a shower of confetti.
The oriental prince leaned his head forward towards his sultana.
‘Will you allow me, señorita?’ he whispered, his lean fingers with infinite gentleness removing her velvet mask. His gaze delved deeply into her large, glowing green irises, reading the emotion in her upturned face as her body yielded helplessly to his touch. A rush of blood coursed wildly through Alexandra’s veins as his hand once more slipped about her waist, pausing before pulling her against him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hannah Fielding is an incurable romantic. The seeds for her writing career were sown in early childhood, spent in Egypt, when she came to an agreement with her governess Zula: for each fairy story Zula told, Hannah would invent and relate one of her own. Years later – following a degree in French literature, several years of travelling in Europe, falling in love with an Englishman, the arrival of two beautiful children and a career in property development – Hannah decided after so many years of yearning to write that the time was now. Today, she lives the dream: writing full time at her homes in Kent, England, and the South of France, where she dreams up romances overlooking breath-taking views of the Mediterranean.
To date, Hannah has published three novels: Burning Embers, ‘romance like Hollywood used to make’, set in Kenya, 1970; the award-winning Echoes of Love, ‘an epic love story that is beautifully told’ set in turn-of-the-millennium Italy; and Indiscretion, her fieriest novel yet, set in 1950s Spain.
