PROMOTIONAL SPOTLIGHT - VAEMPIRES SERIES BY THOMAS WINSHIP

BLURB from Amazon.co.uk
It’s almost Christmas. With the global holiday days away, the people of the world should be turning their attention toward celebrating peace and goodwill, but tension between humans, vampires, and væmpires is at an all-time high. Desperate for solutions, King Brant schedules a secret summit deep in North America’s Northern Forest. Along with Queen Anne, Princess Cassandra, Daniel’s family, and the human President and First Lady, the vampire leader seeks to reaffirm the ties between humans and vampires, while brainstorming ways to respond to the growing hostility among væmpires.

Meanwhile, Daniel and Cassie’s relationship is at an all-time low. The princess is still reeling from her breakup with Vielyn, and Daniel doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do to help. Little does he know that the summit will be flooded with surprises—guests, allegations, accusations, proposals, and even Christmas Eve revelations—but not all of the surprises will be pleasant.

It is the morning of Princess Cassandra’s sixteenth birthday. Everyone’s attention is focused on the heir to the vampire throne. World leaders, the rich and famous, and VIPs from every corner of the globe have gathered in the nation’s capital to celebrate the momentous event.

Cassandra’s boyfriend, Daniel, is late for the party. He’s still outside the city when all hell breaks loose. What he believes is an act of terrorism proves to be a full-fledged revolution. Væmpires—former vampires who mutated into warm-blooded creatures with an insatiable hunger for cold blood—have launched coordinated attacks across the globe, with three goals: the eradication of humanity, the enslavement of vampires, and the ascension of væmpires as the dominant species on the planet.

The vampire and human leaders are killed. Cassandra is missing. Daniel is the acting king. Desperate to find the princess, Daniel and his friends fight their way across the besieged city. With the hopes of the free world resting on the shoulders of four vampire teenagers, væmpires unleash their secret weapons—væmpires with special powers.

What can four teens do against an enemy that can shape-shift, fly, or walk through walls?

If her father finds out Chloe plays with ghosts after school, she’ll be grounded forever. Why? Because for Chloe, playing with ghosts means racing them from rooftop to rooftop across the Manhattan skyline. Not to worry; when you’re fourteen, you’re immortal, so what could possibly go wrong?

Well, let’s see...

Being asked by a ghost for directions and becoming the target of a seventeen-year-old assassin? Having to ride an actual ghost train and save a friend who never existed? How about befriending the scariest clowns you’ve ever met or learning your father may be a mad scientist and your life a lie?

Now Chloe is left with only one choice: enter the Half-World and seek out the truth that lies beyond reality—if there’s such a thing as reality, of course.

MY REVIEW
I received this book directly from the Author as a review request in exchange fr an honest review from myself.
The cover is fairly plain, though it is an attractive colour it doesn't immediately grab you. The Train silhouette on the cover, to me represents the Ghost Train, so is definitely in keeping with the plot of the book.
The book is quite a complex story, but it unfolds at a reasonable pace, and keeps you interested and wanting to know what will happen to Chloe and her friend Alice. Chloe's father and Alice's mother are sort of "mad scientists" who work at Kling Klang, they create "shifts" as part of their work. There's a lot of company espionage, as another company called "The Industry" want to take over. Approximately a year ago there was a terrible accident and Chloe's mother was killed, ...or was she?....and was it and accident or an experiment that went wrong?
Chloe and Alice go to the rooftops and run with the "Echoes" or ghosts from building to building, then one day one of the "echoes" starts trying to communicate with Alice and Chloe.
There's lots going on in the book, and it has lots of interesting characters. The ending leaves you on a cliff hanger, you don't really know what has happened to Chloe or her friends. I could go on but that would mean revealing much more of the plot and giving you spoilers.
I did like the book and the plot was very imaginative, however there were also times where things felt rather muddled too. I liked the book, but to be totally honest it didn't totally wow me. Some of the names such as Kling Klang are probably more aimed to younger children too. The series title of The Slumberland Station also suggests a younger audience, who I think would most likely love it.
So did I enjoy it? Yes I kinda did, though I think it more suitable to the younger children audience. Would I read more by this Author/Or in this series? Probably yes. Would I recommend? To the right aged group yes. It would be good to prompt children's imagination as to what they think is happening in the book and what they think will happen in Bk#2.

MY REVIEW
I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Winship as I had reviewed his two other titles in this series and really enjoyed those.
As you know I am always totally honest in my reviews so here goes, I truly did not like the cover initially, my reaction was Yuuuuck! and I really didn't care for it at all wondering what on earth it was. Then once I read the book, I realised it was a representation on the Vaempire/Zombie eyes. Once the horrible eye cover made sense it wasn't as horrible (if that makes sense) and I ended up quite liking the image on the cover.
At the very beginning of this book is what I would call a recap chapter in that it gives you a concise run down on Vaempires Christmas and Vaempires Revolution, so it really jogs your memory if you need it. Personally I didn't need it as I had enjoyed and remembered the books clearly. Having said that I think it is a great idea and wish other authors did the same in their book series. Once the recap is over you kind of back track in the story a little and we see things and events from Linq and Ray's point of view. Then there story catches up to where we left the "events" and the stories become as one. We follow Linq and Ray whilst they fight their way to try and find Daniel and Princess Cassandra. we also have chapters from Princess Cassandra's point of view and her interactions with the newly turned and self appointed leader of the Vaempires, Vielyn. As we know Vielyn used to be friends with Linq, Ray and Daniel when he was a Vampire , but since he evolved into a Vaempire he has totally changed and only feels animosity towards his former friends.
Ray and Linq eventually find Daniel but they have yet to find and maybe "rescue" Princess Cassandra. I won't actually go any further into the plot as I want you all to discover for yourselves.
The book ends with yet more cliff hangers than you had at the start of the book, which is of course great as it makes you impatient for the next book!
So to sum up this book has friendship and love, sacrifice, lots of action, fighting, drama and blood and guts too. The only downside of the book I wanted even more, I didn't want it to end.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, Would I recommend? Yes, though this one does have a little more blood and guts to it. Do I want to read more? Definitely! Please. Would I read other books by Thomas Winship? Oh Yes.

MY REVIEW
I was generously given this kindle book by the author Airicka Phoenix in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
Firstly I really would have been drawn to this book by the cover, I like the coloring of the cover as well as the picture and the fact it once you have read the book you realize it depicts Fallen and Isaiah. The cover represents their attraction very well. The cover is one of those that draws you in and makes you want to discover more.
The blurb, well yes its a good blurb, but I still have a slight feeling that it doesn't quite do the book the justice it should.
Now for the book, wow I loved it. Yes it starts off slowly and then the mystery and suspense climb higher and higher. Wow what can I say, Fallon has always lived a life of moving around with her mother, never staying anywhere for too long. Erin, Fallon's mum has told Fallon that her father is dead, but never seems to want to tell Fallon any details about him at all.
Fallon notices that they are being followed my a mystery figure dressed in black riding a motorbike.
Hmm it's difficult deciding what to say and what not to say as I really think you should read this book as I did not knowing certain things. So I am leaving out what I would think of as large spoilers! Well spoilers of any sort really.
Fallon and Isaiah finally meet and feel immediately drawn to each other. Isaiah also has to keep moving as the "monster" chasing Fallon also wants him too.
Who is the monster? ......... What does he want with them?.........How come Isaiah knows Fallons dad? .... Why did Erin let Fallon believe her father was dead?
So many questions that will all be answered by reading the book for yourselves!
I really got hooked into this story and once again found myself  feeling that I couldn't put it down, I had to finish it!
So did I enjoy the book? Yes it is a really promising start to what could be a brilliant series Would I recommend the book? Yes, I have recommended to friends already! Would I read more in the series? Yes pleease Would I read more by Airicka Phoenix? Yes!

BLURB from Goodreads
In 1983, two high school friends set out to honor a fallen soldier from the Vietnam War. A coming of age story about honor and sacrifice.

MY REVIEW
I was given  the e-copy of this book by the Author Phil Rossi in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion.
So the cover, I would say it would attract boys and men but perhaps put off the females a little. The cover is more representative of the fallen soldier being honored than the other characters in the book. In my opinion the blurb really doesn't do the book justice, and perhaps isn't drawing as many readers to this book as it could or should. The book is fairly sort and I read it all in one go. So its the ideal length for a "cup of tea" afternoon read.
My first instinct was that this book was going to be a "Blokey" mans book, but it really isn't. It's the story of a couple of young lads who the school system and it seems everyone around them has written off as layabouts and "never do wells". They aren't the popular guys, in fact they are more belonging to the misfit's crowd, who get bullied by the more popular well off kids. Both the boys David and Eddie come from a working class background and have paper rounds. That's how Eddie meets the man whose son is the soldier honored by the tree planted at their school. The story revolves around the tree. The school is having an extension built and the tree is taken out and just laid aside, discarded unceremoniously on the ground.
I don't want to tell you the whole story, as you should read it for yourself. It's quite unusual what the boys decide to do and there's a surprise twist or turn here and there too.
So what did I think? The first part of the story seemed slightly wordy, and a little over described in places. The plot was a little slow starting. Then when you realize certain things come together like a jigsaw and make more sense. When you have finished the book you can't help but smile. In our era of soldiers being away on duty makes the story all the more poignant really.
Did I enjoy the book? After the first third of it yes I did. Would I recommend it? I think perhaps it is something that could be read in schools to promote respect for soldiers, and each other. As well as reinforcing the "lest we forget" message of Remembrance Day. Would I read more by this author? Yes I would give other books by him a go.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW - LIANNE SIMON

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in a small Midwestern town just outside of Chicago. My husband and I live outside of Atlanta, in Suwanee, Georgia.

Did it take a long time to get your first book published?
It was about two years from when I started writing to the release date of my novel.

What is the name of your latest book and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
Confessions of a Teenage Hermaphrodite is an unusual young adult coming-of-age novel about an intersex teen.To become the man his parents expect, Jamie must leave behind the hopes and dreams of a little girl.

Who is your publisher? or do you self publish?
I am privileged to have contracted with MuseItUp Publishing, a progressive traditional publisher from Canada.

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
My heart is set on writing young adult fantasy that deals with social issues.

Do you have a favourite character form your books? and why are they your favourite?
When I wrote Confessions, I had to become Jamie the hermaphrodite, to experience her heartache. She really touched my life.

Where do you get your plot ideas from? What/Who is your inspiration?
I have several intersex friends. We shared stories of issues we face growing up between the sexes in a world that expects male and female.

Do you have anybody read your book and give you reviews before you officially release them? ie. Your partner, children, friends, reviewers you know?
I have several wonderful critique partners who cut me no slack. I also sent my manuscript out to several editors for manuscript evaluations. One was instrumental in getting me to rewrite my entire manuscript in first person, making the story my own, and sharing from the heart.

Do you gift books to readers to do reviews?
Certainly. It would be rude to expect a reviewer to pay for my book.

Would you ever ask a reviewer to change their review if it was not all positive about your book/books?
`No. I would be tempted to try to explain something if they misunderstood. But any misunderstanding reflects a shortcoming in my writing. Although reviewers come to different conclusions, I don't expect everyone to feel the same way about my book. What good would that be? It wouldn't give me any real feedback.

How do you come up with the Title and Cover Designs for your book/books? Who designed the cover of your books?
I started with the title Faie, which means enchanted. Nobody seemed to understand that, so I added a subtitle Growing Up Intersex.I got no responses to my query, so I changed to the more provocative title Confessions of a Teenage Hermaphrodite. That resulted in three contract offers. I came up with the cover concepts and my publisher accepted the one they felt best represented the genre.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?
The characters were based on people I know, but modified a bit for the story. They determine the plot and the plot changes the characters  somewhat.

What do you think makes a book a really good/bestseller?
Strong characters what the reader can latch on to. A plot that fits the character and keeps the readers' attention. And depth of emotion that changes the readers' lives.

Have you ever base characters on people you know or based events on things that have happened to you?
All the time, although I try to change enough that nobody recognizes them.

Which format of book do you prefer, ebook, hardback, or paperback?
Paperback.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is your favourite/worst book to movie transfer?
I think imagination is lost in the process. I liked A Little Princess.  I think Blade Runner lost something in the translation.

Do you think ebooks will ever totally replace printed books?
I think some people will always collect old books. I have a book that was published in 1650 in Edinburgh. There is something special about just holding it. On the other hand, when 'smart paper' becomes available and one book can be any one you want, ebooks will rule.

Do you think children at schools these days are encouraged enough to read? and/or do Imaginative writing?
I'm afraid the goal of school isn't to encourage imagination, but the conformity necessary for the work force.

Did you read a lot at school and write lots of stories or is being a writer something newer in your life?
My mother taught me to love reading before sending me off to school, but writing is something I picked up as an adult.

Do you have a treasured book from your childhood? If yes, what is it?
I have a set of books call My Book House. It starts with simple nursery rhymes and builds up to complex stories. The illustrations are beautiful. I often browse through the stories I learned to love.

What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Let yourself be vulnerable. Bleed onto the paper. Share your innermost being in your characters.

Where can readers follow you?

Julia has a secret: she killed the guy she loved. It was an accident—sort of.

Julia is a Sary, the soul of a child who died before taking her first breath. Without this 'breath of life' she and others like her must help those on the verge of suicide. It's a job Julia used to enjoy, until the accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life—an accident she knows was her fault. If living with the guilt weren't enough, she's now assigned to help a girl dealing with the loss of her mother, something Julia's not exactly the best role model for. If she can't figure out a way to help her, Julia's going to lose her position in the Sary, something she swore to her boyfriend would never happen.

MY REVIEW
I received this e-copy direct from the author, in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
I like the cover, the floating feather and how the scene is in a red hue does make the book cover look appealing. Does the cover go with the story? That's where the lone feather is relevant and after reading the book I imagine the scene being of Paradise Island.
The plot is quite different in that the "beings" are called The Sary. A Sary is the soul of a child that never took his or her first breath. The soul is given a choice to go "into the light" or become a Sary. So what's a Sary do? A Sary is assigned to a human who is suicidal. It is the Sary's job to try and help the human and prevent them from committing suicide.
So Julia is a Sary and is assigned to Marcy. Marcy has family and boyfriend issues. But then Julia also has problems too, se is depressed herself over the death of her companion Sary Derek. So can Julia overcome her sadness and depression enough to actually help Marcy.
I don't want to say a great deal more for the sake of revealing spoilers.
I really liked this book as I thought it's quite a different concept. I haven't read any others with "The Sary" in them so that appealed to me. There's quite a lot going on too, there's Marcy's story, then Julia's past, then a new guy arrives in town called Edison and it's a case of what or who is he. There's things going on with Marcy's violent ex-boyfriend. Marcy has no one else to turn to but Julia as her mother recently died and since then her father has taken to drinking excessively  There is also the consequence of if Julia fails her assignment she may even lose her position of Sary, which would then break the last promise she ever made to her Sary companion Derek.
I really got into this book straight away and it kept my interest all the way through to the end. It didn't end as I had thought, but I did like the ending it had. All the questions raised were answered, which is always good. Could there be a Bk#2? I think so yes and it could have all three main characters, Marcy, Edison and Julia as well as introducing more of the Sary too.
So did I enjoy the book?Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes would love to, in my opinion it has plenty of scope for more stories etc. Would I read more by Meradeth Houston? Yes I really enjoyed her writing style, it flowed so easily and had just enough details to envisage what she was describing without becoming bogged down with too much information or words as some books I have previously read have had.
Would I recommend? Yes I think it would appeal to quite a wide market, YA, Romance, Historical.....

Living on the razors edge, Giselle Burgman's life is torn apart by her cheating boyfriend. Little does she realise that he is the least of her worries when her long term friend Alex introduces her to his family and a new, darker world. A world of lies, deceit and corruption. Thrown from one problem straight into another, the razors edge gets thinner and sharper, testing Giselle's sanity and vitality. Not even she can hide when living within the shadows.

MY REVIEW

I downloaded this one when it was FREE on Amazon! I do talk to the lovely author Julieanne on facebook and thought it about time I read and reviewed one of her books. I do wish to state that just because I speak to this author online, this has in no way affected my review. My review is my totally honest opinion.
The cover gives off a haunting feeling to me and I would say the woman on the cover is of course Giselle. I like the cover as to me it represents a scene or two from within the book.
I really enjoyed the book, at 205 pages it is quite short. I am hoping that this book is the promising beginning of possibly really great series. This story is a dark tale full of mystery.
Giselle discover that her boyfriend Marc as slept with one of the "school tarts"Evie, as she, Giselle herself is not ready to take the next step in their relationship. Giselle is given a tape showing Marc and Evie in their "throes of passion". Giselle is devastated that Marc has betrayed her in this way. The broken hearted Giselle turns to her closest friend Alex. Alex is always there for her and when he suggests seeking the ultimate revenge on Marc and Evie, Giselle is easily convinced.
So on the night of the big Prom, Marc and Giselle are crowned King and Queen. then Giselle puts the tape on and shows everyone exactly what Marc and Evie have been up to.
Giselle runs out of the hall and straight into imminent danger. Giselle's life is about to change completely. Alex is not totally the loyal friend he has made himself out to be. In fact some would say he is a monster! Alex belong to a dark dangerous world, full of lies, and deceit.
Giselle's life ricochets from one dangerous situation to another. She tries to escape many times only to find herself in an even worse situation than before. Who can Giselle trust?
Giselle seems to be being coerced, and blackmailed into doing things she really doesn't want to do. Alex and his family seem to think that she is part of an ancient prophecy. Giselle must carry Alex's child and the child will be the beginning of a newer race.
The book ends in a cliff hanger type of way. I would love to read more of this series and learn more about Giselle and what is going to happen to her and her family. Also the title Within The Shadows (Shadow World Novels) suggests more in the series to come...
I have purposely not said what type of "monster" Alex is, or what creatures are featured in the book.
I really don't want to say anymore as I feel you should discover the book as I did, by reading it yourself.
So did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I recommend it? Definitely Would I read more of this series? Yes please. Would I read more by Julieanne Lynch? Of course yes.

Death is what you make it. . . .

Eleanor never wanted to leave the daughter she loved so much. The overpowering urge to wander -- to search, without knowing what she sought -- drove her away. She left little Cassidy in her family's loving care. But Cassidy and the others died in an accident before Eleanor could find her way home.

Cassidy has her grandparents, and her Great-Grandma. And all of them have what may be eternity. Memories can be relived, or shared. The wonders of the world they left behind are only a thought away. The one-way tyranny of aging is no more -- a white-haired and stooped great-grandmother one moment can be a laughing young playmate the next. But nothing can ease Cassidy's longing for her mother; and Eleanor's parents know better than to hope that Eleanor's life has been a happy one.

Now, they are all reunited, with the chance to understand and heal. But the restlessness that shaped Eleanor's life still haunts her in death. Somehow, she must solve the mystery of her life -- or none of them will be at peace.

MY REVIEW
I was actually asked to Beta-Read this book and give my honest opinion on it. The book plot wasn't 100% finalized and indeed it has been tweaked since the first version I read. The book also had no title or cover. The cover above may yet be changed or tweaked.
I like this cover as it could represent either the three main females in the book, and also three of the main "ages" visited in the book.
The blurb is great it gives you enough information to interest you further yet leaves out the things I feel are important for you to discover in the book for yourselves.
The book begins with Cassie, and I admit I was a little confused as to who she was and what was happening, but, as you read further all becomes clear and it makes you appreciate the beginning and how it was written. The book flows really well and keeps your interest throughout. Of course there are always characters you prefer to others, in this book I found I liked most characters. there was only Cassie's grand dad that I disliked a little and maybe that was as he was quite a small character within the whole story. I also admit to disliking Eleanor to begin with. Eleanor initially seems a selfish kind of person who cares only for herself giving no thought as to how her actions affect those around her. The character of Eleanor led me to believe that Cassie was viewed as a "burden" to her in her life. Then as the story develops you learn more about the character of Eleanor, and there are some twists and turns in the plot that explain that Eleanor to the reader so you can understand her more.
The book deals with some complex issues that people have varying opinion on such as the afterlife, re-incarnation, as well as simpler and more widely and freely discussed concepts like fate and destiny. That there is a bigger plan for us all, that our lives are mapped out even before we are born.
I loved Karen's version of how we "live on" after death and the fact that we reunite with our loved ones that have passed before us as well as seeing those that pass after us once again too.
The book really reminded me of an old film I watched as a child. Originally a Russian Film dubbed into English, starring a very young Patsy Kensit. It was about two young children who are tasked with finding and bringing back an elusive bluebird. To find this bluebird they visit many strange places and meet many people such as "Old Father Time" They see a place where babies are collected and sent down to earth/life to their parents. they also see the "afterlife" where your loved ones go when they pass. It was depicted as a beautiful cottage and garden that your loved ones "live2 in and they some how "sense" when you think of them and feel happy you are thinking of them. The film left me feeling really contented and really calm and happy. That is the same strong feeling and emotions you feel upon reading this book.
Karen writes it so well, I hope she doesn't take offense to the following analogy but you feel like you are slipping on a "comfy cardigan" when you fall into the plot and story of this novel.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes *sigh* (that's just how contented you feel upon reading it) Would I read more, if this book turns out to be part of a series? Yes. Would I read more by Karen A. Wyle? I already intend to! Would I recommend? Yes and I have.

Paralyzed from the chest down, with his life’s GPS offline, Matt is forced to recalculate his path in life.

MY REVIEW
I received this book via my daughter who received a box of books form Goldie Browning at StoryTeller Publishing.
I like the cover with a picture which I would say depicts Matthew in his wheelchair after his accident. The byline says "Life's detours can sometimes lead to the best path" and certainly fits the book plot.
Matthew seems to have everything going for him and his gorgeous fiancée, they are all set to marry and have a long relationship and life together ahead of them. Then tragedy strikes when he is involved in an accident. Matthew has many hurdles to face as because of the accident he is paralyzed from the chest down. So his only method of getting around is in a wheelchair.Things don't go according to plan with his fiancée as she seems unable to handle the person Matthew has become after the accident.
So does Matthew manage to hold onto the relationship, or is there a newer and better one around the corner. This book certainly makes you believe in fate and that everything good or bad happens for a reason.
The book is beautifully written making it a joy to read. I would say there are not enough stars in the sky to give to this book! It's fantastic. You get really involved and nearing the end you are on the edge of your seat wondering about the final outcome. I desperately, desperatley wanted it all to end a certain way and I was pleasantly surprised and fully satisfied by the beautiful ending.
So did I enjoy it? YES! Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I read more by Lorris Kruse?Yes please!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW - LORRIE KRUSE

What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
My name is Lorrie Kruse. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, and lived there until I was 9 when we moved to central Wisconsin to be closer to my mother’s family, and I’ve been here ever since.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
My first reaction to the “did you always want to be a writer” question is no. However, I think that perhaps I did have a writer living inside me long before I realized it. I recall in high school once having to write an essay as to where we saw ourselves at some point in our future, I think it might have been in 10 years, but I don’t recall for sure. What I do remember, however, is that my essay included me living in Hawaii (never happened, never will - haven’t even visited) and spending my time writing (Huh? Me, writing? Really? I guess the subconscious knows more than we think.). My conscious mind had other plans. I wanted to go to college to become an English teacher or a home-ec teacher. That never happened. I instead went to a technical college for accounting and proceeded to ignore that calling as well and became a secretary instead. But, hey, I guess I got the writing part right.

Did it take a long time to get your first book published?
Is “forever” a long time? Okay, seriously, it didn’t take forever to get published but it sure was a long, hard road. I started writing around fifteen years ago. My biggest roadblock was that I really didn’t know how to craft a story properly until about six years ago. My next roadblock came in that I was targeting agents as a stepping stone to getting published. Hey, all you agents who rejected me, guess what? I didn’t need you. (See me smiling?)

Do you work another job as well as your writing work?
Yes. I work at a law firm as a legal secretary.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
My book is A Life Worth Living. It’s Matt’s journey after he’s paralyzed in an automobile accident as he has to balance the desire to walk again with the reality that might not happen. (Sorry, I went over 20 words.)

Who is your publisher? or do you self publish?
My publisher is a great, new publisher - Storyteller Publishing out of Texas. They are such great people (husband and wife team).

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
I’m working on a romantic suspense right now and I’m about halfway done. I’d love to say that means the new book will be ready for publication in the next few months. Unfortunately, other things (i.e. life) keep getting in the way of my writing.

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?
I’ve been writing for 15 years. I started writing because I was reading a book by John Sandford, one of his Prey series, and I came up with a story idea. I was going to contact John Sandford to give him my idea, but I just never got around to doing so. The story idea stuck in my head and one day I decided to try writing it myself. When I started to write it, however, it turned into a totally different story. I still have that original idea rolling around inside my head., waiting to get written…by me. Sorry Mr. Sandford, I’m not sharing the idea with you.

Do you have anybody read your books and give you reviews before you officially release them?ie. Your partner, children, friends, reviewers you know?
I’m a member of a writers’ critique group. It’s often very frustrating because I give them a chapter to read that I’m really happy with and then they pick it to pieces, which really shakes up a person’s confidence. However, once the wounds heal and you look back, you realize that the book is a much better story because of their suggestions. I highly recommend that writers have at least one person whose opinion they trust read their book before they attempt to submit it to any agent or editor.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?
I’m a newbie with A Life Worth Living being my first published book, so, yes, I read all the reviews I come across. I’m lucky (or, should I rephrase that as I’m talented?) that all of my reviews have been favorable. Or, at least all of the reviews I’ve found.

What was the toughest/best review you have ever had?
The best review I had stated “Have the tissues ready when you read this book, it will hit your heart in many places. Bravo, Ms Kruse!” It seems weird to be happy that you made someone cry, but I take it to be a great compliment. It says I have enough talent to grasp the reader’s emotions. That review made me want to do the happy dance.

Would you ever ask a reviewer to change their review if it was not all positive about your book/books?
I find that question very timely. Just yesterday I was reading a post on an internet writing group I’m a member of and the posting person asked if any of us would ever remove a negative review. I hadn’t known removing it would be anything the writer could even do. My response was that hopefully the book has gotten enough positive reviews to easily negate the negative review and that anyone reading the various reviews will see the negative review as a fluke. So, no, I would never ask to have a negative review removed or revised. I would, however, wish for a review to be revised if it contained a non-truth about the book itself or if the review contained anything to spoil what should remain a surprise to someone who hasn’t read the book.‘

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
A Life Worth Living started out as The Accident. As I was writing the story, I realized The Accident wasn’t a real catchy title and it doesn’t speak to the reader. With the book I’m writing now, the same thing happened. I don’t recall what the original title was but I came up with the title of Keep Your Friends Closer as I was writing. I’m hoping I get to keep that title when it gets published as often publishers come up with other titles and they have the last say on titles.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?
I would have to say the character traits come in the creation of the character, which comes in the creation of the story. It‘s something that kind of all plays against each other. The neat thing about writing is that you can go back and change things. So, if halfway through the book you discover your character needs a certain trait, you can go back to the beginning and give them that trait.

What do you think makes a book a really good/bestseller ?
A great plot, lovable yet flawed characters that you’d love to have as a friend, and a whole lot of luck.

Have you ever based characters on people you know or based events on things that have happened to you?
There’s a little bit of me in a lot of my characters. I was working on a short story where Ruby talked to her boyfriend’s dog as though she actually thought Harry understood her. I do that with my own dog. In A Life Worth Living, Matt’s messiness is based on my husband’s disorganizational skills. Matt does so many things that my husband does. Matt tells a story in the book about how when he was a child he’d found his birthday presents and opened them all up and then wrapped them up again. That’s my own personal true childhood experience.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")
For A Life Worth Living, there’s a definite message and I hope it’s not all that hidden. The message is that no matter what happens in your life, it’s still a life that’s worth living. We all have tragedies. We have a choice…let the tragedy pull us down under and end us, or get beyond it and move on.

Which format of book do you prefer, ebook, hardback, or paperback?
E-readers have their benefits, but there is nothing like holding a book, feeling those crisp pages.

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it?(ebook, hardback or paperback)
I’m reading an Odd Thomas book of Dean Koontz, Odd Interlude. Thinking of my answer to the last question, my shoulders are slumping as I admit, it’s on my Kindle. Shame on me. But, in my defense, Odd Interlude is only offered as an e-book, so I HAD to get it for my Kindle. Umm, what’s that you ask? Why did I get Odd Apocalypse for my Kindle? Umm, because….

Do you think ebooks will ever totally replace printed books?
Sadly, yes, I do. Oh, how awful to think that someday kids might ask “What’s a paper book?” kind of like they ask “What’s a record” or “What’s an 8-track tape?”

Did you read a lot at school and write lots of stories or is being a writer something newer in your life?
I read all the time. I loved it when the teacher handed out the Scholastic Book flyers. I eagerly went through the flyers looking at each and every book offered, circling my many choices. I thank my mom for indulging me even though money was tight. THANKS MOM!

Is there a book you know you will never read? Or one you tried to read but just couldn't finish?
Oh, my gosh, I love that last question. There have been lots of books I’ve gotten that I just couldn’t get past the first few pages, but the funniest one is I’d bought a book at an RWA conference because it sounded really good and when I got home I discovered that I’d bought the same book the prior year at the RWA conference and had forgotten I’d bought it. I then discovered the book was really awful. So, I’ve got two copies of the same awful book.

Are there any New Authors you are interested in for us to watch out for? and Why should we watch out for them?
I don’t know that she qualifies as a new author, but she’s relatively new to me. I discovered Jane Porter a few years ago, and I love her stories. I highly recommend her books. (Disclaimer, she has single title books and Harlequin books. I’ve never read her Harlequin books. I tend to not like Harlequin books (sorry Harlequin).I recommend her single-title books.)

What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Learn everything you possibly can about writing as early into the writing process as possible. You will save yourself so much time and frustration if you do so. I recommend Albert Zuckerman’s Writing the Blockbuster Novel and Donald Maass’s Writing the Breakout Novel.

If you could invite three favourite writers to dinner, who would you invite and enjoy chatting with?
Harlan Cobin, Jeff Lindsay, and Dean Koontz. Yup, I think I could learn a lot from those three authors.
