BLURB from Goodreads
Sixteen-year-old Lark Ainsley has never seen the sky.
Her world ends at the edge of the vast domed barrier of energy enclosing all that’s left of humanity. For two hundred years the city has sustained this barrier by harvesting its children's innate magical energy when they reach adolescence. When it’s Lark’s turn to be harvested, she finds herself trapped in a nightmarish web of experiments and learns she is something out of legend itself: a Renewable, able to regenerate her own power after it’s been stripped.
Forced to flee the only home she knows to avoid life as a human battery, Lark must fight her way through the terrible wilderness beyond the edge of the world. With the city’s clockwork creations close on her heels and a strange wild boy stalking her in the countryside, she must move quickly if she is to have any hope of survival. She’s heard the stories that somewhere to the west are others like her, hidden in secret—but can she stay alive long enough to find them?

MY REVIEW
I was lucky enough to be allowed access to download this one from Netgalley.
there are more than one style of cover for this book so my comments below are on the one pictured above, which though I like all the available covers the one pictured is my favourite.
I love the cover especially after reading the book, it makes the cover even more relevant. The cover features a scene from the book, where Ryan and Beth finally kiss in the pouring rain. I loved that scene in the book. Again there's a quote from another Author about the book, which sure it's great but why not put it on the back cover, though I will admit that the quote doesn't interfere with the book cover flow. I do like how the title is sort of down the side of the book cover and vertical rather than horizontal and in the larger font. Then the authors name is horizontal across the bottom of the book.
So this book deals with characters we first met in Pushing The Limits. The main character that this story is centred on is Beth, we also see some of Noah, Isaiah and a peek of Echo. We do meet quite a few new characters too, Ryan, the head jock and one of the "terrible trio" as I'll nickname them! Chris, also part of the terrible trio who goes out with Lacy. The final guy in the "terrible trio" is Logan. I'm nicknaming the three guys the "terrible trio" as they are on the whole great guys, who love nothing more than to dare each other to do outrageous things.
The story begins with Chris, Logan and Ryan's current dare which is to see who can get the most telephone numbers from random girls they pick out from the crowd! This is how Ryan first meets Beth. He tries his best to get her number and basically she tells him in no uncertain terms to clear off (or more colourful words to that effect!)
There are three main sections of the plot of the story, one concentrates on Ryan trying to complete the dare as he doesn't like to lose, he is used to being a winner. another is Beth's life including her relationship with her mum and the abuse she undergoes at the hands of Trent her mum's latest boyfriend. The final main thread of the plot is Beth and Isaiah's relationship, Beth see's them as best friends no matter what happens in her life, whereas Isaiah is, as we know from Pushing The Limits really genuinely deeply loves Beth and is scared to tell her as he thinks he may scare her aware.
What starts out as a dare between the guys, quickly turns into more, something that ends up much deeper, though ever more complicated and at times confusing for both parties involved.
I really love how Katie McGarry write, her descriptions are so good, her characters are so fantastically believable. The book and plot flows so well and makes the book such an easy read that you seriously don't want to put down. You really do once again become attached to the characters, you follow and really feel like you are experiencing their emotions along with them. I didn't want to put this book down once I began reading I readily admit to begin with I was really reluctant to read this one, seriously dragging my feet, I kept opening it and then closing it on my kindle when I thought the "old gang" of Isaiah, Noah & Echo would not be featured in it more. Then I spoke to a fellow blogger who told me she fell in love with the new characters too and that the "old gang" did appear in this book too, though only small parts.
Anyhow I "bit the bullet" and plunged in determined to give it a go and I was really pleasantly surprised and ended up falling seriously in love with this book and the characters. I had laughs, smiles, irony, feelings of a "been there been through that" feelings as well as eye brimming with tears, holding my breath and tears trickling down my face. the book takes you through a whole wide range of emotions.
So did I enjoy the book? Seriously? I didn't just enjoy it I loved it! Would I recommend this book? I'd highly recommend it, not just exclusively for the YA crowd either as I am *coughs n mumbles* much older than a teenager and loved the book. Would I read a Bk#3 in this series? Yes when can I read it please? Would I read other books by this Author? I would be highly likely to check out any books by this talented author.
Anything else to add? Yep, I just discovered that Bk#3 Crash Into You is going to be about Isaiah. I've a feeling I'm going to love this one too.

"I won't tell anyone, Echo. I promise." Noah tucked a curl behind my ear. It had been so long since someone touched me like he did. Why did it have to be Noah Hutchins? His dark brown eyes shifted to my covered arms. "You didn't do that-did you? It was done to you?" No one ever asked that question. They stared. They whispered. They laughed. But they never asked.
So wrong for each other...and yet so right.
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible. Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

Katie McGarry captivated readers with her "riveting, emotional"* Young Adult debut, Pushing the Limits. In this gripping novella, she tells the story of Lila and Lincoln, who discover that sometimes it's worth crossing the line for love...
Lila McCormick first met Lincoln Turner when tragedy struck both their lives. But she never expected their surprise encounter would lead to two years of exchanging letters-or that she'd fall for the boy she's only seen once. Their relationship is a secret, but Lila feels closer to Lincoln than anyone else. Until she finds out that he lied to her about the one thing she depended on him for the most.
Hurting Lila is the last thing Lincoln wanted. For two years, her letters have been the only thing getting him through the day. Admitting his feelings would cross a line he's never dared breach before. AUTHOR INTERVIEW - SHANNON MCROBERTS
What is your name, where were you born and
where do you live now?
My name is
Shannon McRoberts, I was born and raised in Kentucky and I still reside
there.
Did you always want to be a writer? If not
what did you want to be?
I remember
making little stories up with my grandmother when I was only 5 or so and
writing them down. I guess in a way I’ve
always been trying to write something. Poetry came easiest and it wasn’t until
much later that I started with prose again.
Part of my has always wanted to be an artist. I used to want to be a lawyer, but I changed
my mind.
Did it take a long time to get your first
book published?
No, it did not. Back in 2005 I published a book of poetry
after researching how to do it. This was
before eBooks. I never cared to query an
agent or anything like that. I just
learned how to do it all myself and then went through Lulu.com.
Do you work another job as well as your
writing work?
Yes, like all artists, I
have a full time job. I work at a desk
and it’s very technical in nature. I’d
love for my art/poetry/books to take off, but until then I have a house
payment!
Who is your publisher? or do you self publish?
I self publish everything. I have no desire to have an agent or a
publishing house telling me what to do.
I very much love controlling my creations from start to finish.
How long does it usually take you to write
a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
It really depends on what is going on in my
life and what I am doing with the book.
Some books have taken me years.
Others took me less than six months.
I find the hardest part is connecting all the pieces together and making
them tie into the series.
Do you have plans for a new book? Is this
book part of a series? I am currently
writing my 6th book Cursed Bloods and
it will take off where Verses of Athine
left off and follow that story line.
What genre would you place your books into?
Fantasy with a hint of Sci-Fi
What made you decide to write that genre of
book?
I love fantasy and sci-fi. They say write what you know…well I love
books about strong female leads with super weapons and impossible tasks.
Do you have a favourite out of the books
you have written? If so why is it your favourite?
The
Blood Sisters because I finally got a vampire into my stories. I had been trying for so long and when I
stopped trying to think about them BAM there they come. (I love vampires!)
Do you have a favourite character from your
books? and why are they your favourite?
Athine has to be my favorite. I
created her and this whole world. She’s
a little like me in real life and a little of what I would like to be.
Where do you get your book plot ideas
from?What/Who is your inspiration?
They
just kind of come to me. Now that I am
trying to make everything a cohesive series, where before it was just a lose
series, it is getting harder with all the ‘fact checking’ to make sure parts
match up with the rest of the story--but I find that when I sit down to write
the story just comes alive.
Do you have anybody read your books and
give you reviews before you officially release them?ie. Your partner, children,
friends, reviewers you know?
I know
someone that is an editor so I have them try to read the books. I usually try to have my friends read them
too if they are able to squeeze them into their schedule.
Do you gift books to readers to do reviews?
Yes, I have gifted books to people that do
honest reviews. I haven’t had too many
come back yet.
Do you read all the reviews of your
book/books?
Yes, it is hard not to. I want to know what people think of the
books. I want to know if there is
anything that is really wrong with them or really great about them, etc.
What was the toughest/best review you have
ever had?
The best review I had was a 5
star review from a hardcore fantasy fan.
He totally got everything I was doing in the first installment of the
book Athine Verses: The Beginning, which is free for anyone
to grab. The stuff that many people were
like why did you do this…he totally got it.
Turns out he is hard-core into Fantasy and apparently my book is
somewhere along those lines. I felt
honored because the next few books I saw him review didn’t get that 5 star
rating.
Would you ever ask a reviewer to change
their review if it was not all positive about your book/books?
Not if it were honest. However, there is a fine line between being
constructive and just being hateful. Or,
conversely, being a sock puppet. I am
also a book reviewer and I do not like it when people are just mean in their
reviews. You can point out the flaws
without saying “hey, this book totally sucked and so does the writer”. You know?
However, in today’s world of hiding behind a screen name and saying
whatever comes out of your keyboard I have found that if you get a negative
review like that to just go on and forget it.
The world is full of people that will tear you down for fun. Sometimes ignoring it is the best
option.
Who designed the Cover of your books?
I do my cover design. I started many years ago looking for some way
to make a great cover for my first book in The Daughter of Ares
Chronicles. It actually got me into a
completely different realm of creativity with my fantasy art. I have even had the pleasure of doing cover
designs for other authors. I even had
one tell me that my cover illustration has gained them sales. I was astonished. I find being able to make your own covers is
a great way to also have items like bookmarks and posters available.
How do you come up with characters names
and place names in your books?
I use a
name generator or two and write down the names I like with certain variables
and then as I write I tick them into the story.
Sometimes I use names I make up out of the blue.
How do you market/promote your books? I try to be out on the web. Get to know other authors. Book tours….etc J I am also trying to get into
a local book fair to let everyone see me and meet me here. Having a book in print is very important
IMO.
Which format of book do you prefer,
ebook,hardback, or paperback?
It used to
be whatever I could get my hands on, but eBooks are for me. They are so easy to keep stored and I don’t
trip over them!
What is your favourite book and Why? Have you read it more than once?
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. It was the first series of books I actually
wanted to read. I’ve read it twice now.
Do you think books transfer to movies well?
Which is you favourite/worst book to
movie transfer?
Sometimes, and sometimes
no. I liked the Twilight Movies. Interview with the Vampire. I think with all the fancy stuff they can do
with CGI books are easier to get into movies now. The special effects can be over the top just
like the author wrote them.
Do you think ebooks will ever totally
replace printed books?
No, because some
people just love paper books. I don’t
think they will go the way of VHS tapes or 8 tracks.
Is there a book you know you will never
read? Or one you tried to read but just couldn't finish?
50 Shades of Grey. I couldn’t get past the free sample. That’s why I love eBooks for the free
samples…it saves me money!
What do you think about book trailers?
I think they are neat! I make my own. I don’t know that it gets people to go buy
your book, but you should have at least one IMO.
What piece of advice would you give to a
new writer?
Don’t give up. It’s tough.
Also, hire a professional editor or find a really good critique
partner/group!

EXCERPT - VERSES OF ATHINE - THE DAUGHTER OF ARES CHRONICLES BY SHANNON MCROBERTS
EXCERPT
“Athine, hold the sword in one hand and cast a spell with the other!” My mother, Raelin, was always barking orders. It was always practice and then practice some more. Didn’t she know how bored I was? I had been practicing for eons to protect a land that was at peace. I could cast magic with my eyes closed and my fighting skills were second nature to me. Why did I need to practice so much if my skills were already honed?
“Mother, this is useless. No one has attacked Olympus, Draosia, or
Ximira for several centuries. Why must I
keep practicing to be a protector of the lands with these poorly made weapons? They break when I use them. How can I possibly fight with this stick?”
“Athine, you are a goddess of war born
from three different bloodlines. You
must to live up to your legacy. That is
why you have to keep practicing. I do
not know why the weapons keep breaking.
Maybe if you focused more on using your Sh’cersay and less on your poor
attitude the weapons would perform better.”
Ah yes, my ever present poor
attitude. Perhaps it was borne out of
sheer boredom. I had no desire to be a
warrior protector. That was supposed to
be my mother’s job. Yet, she kept trying
to make it mine. Something about a vision or prophecy; I never really paid
attention.
“Athine, stop day dreaming. Andraste and Sabrina will be here tomorrow
for your A’samrad. Do you want to
embarrass your grandmother by not completing the rite of passage? As a potential ruler of Ximira and maybe
even Olympus you are expected to do well.
Anything less would be an embarrassment to the bloodlines; all three of
them.”
“Embarrassment? Potential ruler? Has anyone asked me if I cared lately? I practice day in and day out just for the
possibility that I may be ruler of a humdrum, peaceful country. Maybe if I did fail the A’samrad you all
would let me be. I have no desire to be
a ruler. I do not care that my entire
family is of noble immortals that love to rule.
I want to see other worlds. I
want to live a life of adventure.”
How much clearer could I get? I had no desire to rule any of these lands,
yet they all hoped I would rule one day.
Any of my other siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles would love to play
this role. I was meant for so much more,
but alas no, becoming a “ruler” keeps being dumped on my lap. I secretly wished I could fail the A’samrad
and become an embarrassment. That way I
could go off on an adventure and discover what lay beyond the walls of our
palace. I knew there were harsher worlds
out there ready for me to conquer. I
just had to get out of this world to find them.
