REVIEW - BASTARD OF THE ALPHA - THE DAMNED RETURN BY KARINA ESPINOSA

Title: Bastard Of The Alpha
Series: The Damned Return
Author: Karina Espinosa
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Shifter, Paranormal
Release Date: 27th March 2026

BLURB
My name’s Francesca Lucia Salazar—Frankie, if you don’t feel like choking on the syllables.

The title I usually get stuck with? The Alpha’s Bastard.

My father, Antonio Salazar, Alpha of the Queens Pack, had an affair and got stuck raising me when my mom died giving birth. Guilt made him keep me; shame made him ship me off to Colombia at thirteen.

Big mistake.

He thought I’d disappear. Instead, I became La Loba Blanca—the White She-Wolf of Colombia. An urban legend who hunted the monsters terrorizing the streets.

Then my mentor called. My father’s dead—killed by his beta, Tian Láng—and I’m headed back to New York City to protect the family that once threw me away. But the city I return to isn’t the same. Wolves are vanishing. The ones found aren’t just dead—they’re poisoned in ways no one can explain.

That’s when I meet Elias Láng—the God of Death. Cold, brilliant, impossible. My rival. My equal. My worst mistake waiting to happen. Then there’s Angel Rodriguez—a tattooed ex-con lone wolf fresh out of Ironwood, all charm and chaos, who shouldn’t care but somehow does.

Between the Alpha’s son who challenges everything I am and the lone wolf who sees everything I hide, I’m walking a line thinner than a blade.

I have one rule: trust no one.

But when loyalty and lust start to look the same, even legends can bleed.

New York’s full of secrets, and I’m done being exiled from my own story.

They can call me a bastard all they want.

But this bastard bites back.

REVIEW
I love the cover of this one, the bold, new female character of Frankie being at the centre of it, but it is similar enough to the covers of the Mackenzie Grey covers for it give you the clue that it is set in the same Universe and to fit well the covers of the other books too.

Having read and loved the Mackenzie Grey Universe I was super excited and eager to find out if any of the characters I already knew and loved would be appearing in this book. However, before any of that is revealed we meet the new characters. Frankie is with her team Caro, Santi, Rafa and Isa. They are in midst of a battle in Columbia with a gang who are attempting to kidnap children etc. We get an introduction to each character and their particular specialities whilst they are fighting. It’s after the fighting has stopped that Frankie receives a phone call from Matteo, her Alpha at the Cali pack. Matteo is not only her Alpha but he has also been her father figure since she was sent to his Cali pack when her father banished her from her own pack in New York. Frankie was born Francesca Lucia Salazar, illegitimate daughter of Antonio Salazar. Her mother whom Antonio had an affair with whilst he was married to Carmen, whom he already had children with and went on to have more with after Frankie was born. Carmen later became stepmom to Francesca despite the fact she clearly despised her as she was a constant reminder of her husband infidelity. At age thirteen Antonio sent Francesca/Frankie to Matteo who trained her to be the literal fighting machine she is! It’s whilst in Colombia fighting guerillas and gangs that Frankie earnt the name La Loba Blanca = the white she-wolf.

The phone call from Matteo is to tell her that her father Antonio is dead, his position as Alpha was challenged and he lost to his beta aka second in command Tian Lang. Matteo wants Frankie to attend the funeral as well as try and sort out something her father was investigating at the time of his death. Someone is taking supernatural’s, wolves, witches, fae, warlock etc and injecting them with an unknown poison. They need to be stopped as the dead bodies of some of the supernatural’s are turning up and some are still missing. Not everyone knows a special fact about Frankie that she is immune to almost all poisons making her an ideal person to investigate, find out what poison is being used and what is happening to the different species of supernatural’s whose bodies are not being found.

Frankie meets Camilo, an old friend of Matteo’s who gives her the keys to an apartment and agrees to keep an eye out for her as a favour to an old friend. It’s whilst she’s at Camilo’s restaurant that a newly out of Ironwood/Supernatural prison that rather persistent lone wolf, Angel Roderiguez meets Frankie and decides to take her under his wing and shamelessly flirt with her.

Frankie makes a brilliant entrance at the funeral, she is definitely announcing that the Alpha’s Bastard is back in perfect kick-butt style, (she really would get along with Mackenzie Grey!!) There’s a brilliant scene where Frankie meets an old favourite of mine from the Mackenzie Grey Universe. I loved it and I already adore the potential of the friendly relationship that could develop between the two. I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction between Frankie and her stepmom Carmen who insists on calling her Francesca as she knows it irks her. Frankie also comes face to face with her step siblings Antonio Juniora, Cristian, Javier and younger sister Estefania whom she hasn’t since she left at age thirteen and Estefania was a baby. It’s pretty clear Estefania is curious about her older sister, and perhaps knows that all the stories her mom has told her may not be the whole truth.

After the funeral Frankie begins what she considers to be the real task that she is there for and that’s to find out what is going on with the missing supernatural beings. New Alpha Tian Lang instructs Frankie to work with his son Elias, also known as the God Of Death. Theres definitely plenty of tension between Elias and Frankie neither really wanting to work with each other much preferring to do their own thing, but the Alpha has spoken. Elias knows just which buttons to press when it comes to Frankie and goads her and tricks her into proving herself in front of the pack, having her fight four of his best shifters, in front of everyone, all at once! Frankie certainly isn’t the somewhat still naïve teenager that left, she shows Elias and those watching that she can fight, that she really earned her name La Loba Blanca.

Elias takes Frankie to the SIU mortuary to view one of the recovered bodies, time some more faces we know from the Mackenzie Grey Universe as well as being introduced to the Fae that took over when Mackenzie Grey left the SIU. When Frankie is attacked whilst with Elias after their visit to the SIU it soon becomes apparent whoever is kidnapping supernatural beings wants her next!

Frankie is both shocked yet at the same time not totally surprised when the rest of her team from the Cali Pack arrive to help her with the case. Her Cali Pack have heard about the little fight that Elias arranged and to say they are annoyed is an understatement. Frankie fills them in on the main reason she is staying in New York for now, and of course they want to help but then they receive an offer of accommodation on pack grounds from Tian they cannot refuse without creating a war. This also prevents them from really helping Frankie in her investigation forcing her to work solely with Elias. However, when she realises she is being targeted and information about her that only a select few seems to be known by someone in the organisation taking supernatural beings she wonders if someone in the New York Pack is involved. Frankie finally speaks to Matteo and she decides she must find a way to send her team away from her and the danger, as they may end up being targets to get to her.

I absolutely loved this book from the beginning to the end and everything in between! Revisiting the Mackenzie Grey Universe is amazing! The bonus of that is we get to reconnect with some of the amazing characters from those books as well as meeting the new characters of The Damned Return series. I have to say….**spoiler free here** as soon as I read the words or should I say heard the words as Karina’s books always play out in my head like a movie! Anyway, as soon as I heard “her orders” I just knew who “her” was! I love, love, loved it!!

I think Frankie is yet another amazing kick-butt, smart-mouthed, sassy, take no prisoners type of character the type I have come to expect from the books I have read by Karina Espinosa. She’s fiery, feisty, in your face when needed yet not overbearing or pushy in the wrong places. Its clear she has a soft spot for Estefania and is open to some sort of communication and relationship with her and hey it’s a bonus if it irritates her stepmom Carmen at the same time! Frankie’s character did remind me of the no nonsense, never back down, doesn’t care about the male posturing that goes on in packs, Mackenzie Grey.

I’m enjoying all the possible love interests for Frankie, this kick-butt young women really has plenty of options!

Firstly, there’s Angel Roderiguez, ex-con, highly flirtatious but not afraid to step in and fight alongside of Frankie if needs be. The whole time I was reading about Angel I couldn’t decide if he was a new or old Mackenzie Grey Universe character or if he just reminded me of a character from one of Karina Espinosa’s other book series.

There’s the new Alpha’s son, Elias, the God Of Death himself, Elias, the pack enforcer who seems to remember Frankie a lot better than she can remember him from her time at the New York Pack. He also seems to be very apt at pushing her buttons and wants to see just how far he can push her. Does this behaviour mean he had/has a crush/feelings for Frankie?

Next up is Camilo, Matteo’s old friend, we don’t know how much older he is and hey wolves live a long time he obviously cares about Frankie the way he is with her, is it just because he promised a friend he’d look out for her or something more?

Finally, possibly a wild card here, but SIU Detective Cassidy Chan, not sure on his age or relationship status but I really like his character and he could certainly help Frankie with her investigation!

I have plenty of thoughts on the organisation targeting the supernatural beings, it reminds me a little of one featured in Karina Espinosa’s Joey Santana series. My theory is someone is trying to create a hybrid or super-supernatural army or maybe they are some sort of “collector”…..I can’t wait to find out more.

I don’t want to spoil the revealing of who appears in this book that was also in the Mackenzie Grey Universe but I have to say….no promise you will not be disappointed! I could chat forever about which characters are is and how, I loved all that were featured from the Mackenzie Grey Universe and can’t wait to see how things develop.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing reading the book were Amazing!
Fantastic world building great well thought out detailed plot with amazing characters.

Summing up I absolutely adore that its set within the Mackenzie Grey Universe and thought the book had a really great mixture of old well-known characters and new characters we quickly learnt about too. I thought it was amazing how the two interacted so well and honestly, I cannot wait to read more of The Damned Return!

REVIEW
Again the cover fits really well with the other covers of the series and I’d say the image depicts a scene within the book really well.

Sabotaged World picks up 2 years later after the ending of the last book, Lawless World.
The characters we have grown to love over the course of the previous books are split into two sections, there’s Bear, Laurel, Mae, Trent & Jess the dog all living together in the now enlarged cabin that originally belonged to Bear. Everything seems to have settled into a routine, they have joined with locals situated round them to create a thriving community who on the whole look out for each other.

Bear has somewhat come to terms with his issues with his hearing. He quickly realised managing to continue to find hearing aid batteries wasn’t something he could rely on so Bear rather grudgingly, along with his nearest and dearest have learnt a type of sign language that works for them combined with lip reading he manages to get by most of the time. When Bear and Trent go on hunting trips together, Bear is encouraging and allowing Trent to take the lead more. Both Bear and Laurel are secretly happy that their daughter Mae decided against building her own separate cabin and has just added extensions onto Bears original cabin to accommodate their family of four, five including the ever-faithful Jess. Bear and Laurel are pleased that Mae and Trent have ended up with a good sibling like relationship, which they slipped into quite quickly and really easily.

The family are planning for the future, Laurel wants to build a new clinic nearer their own cabin as it would make it much easier for her to care for patients that need to stay at the clinic and would mean she wouldn’t need to be away from the family as much. The protectiveness in Bear wholeheartedly agrees that a clinic closer to their home could be a safer option than where it is situated now. If its near the cabin he will be about in case anything untoward happens. Laurel is starkly aware that she is only one person and is determined to train more people in at least basic first aid as well as gathering more volunteers to train to work at the clinic which will then give her time off to spend with her family and take care of things that need doing at the cabin. Trent has been spending time with Laurel too, picking up on first aid techniques and observing the home remedy type medications that Laurel is trying to gather a decent supply of. Trent has also been paying attention to a young lady who lives nearby called Alyssa and its plain to see he is growing ever fond of her.

Unfortunately, when fires begin to occur and everything points to arson, the peaceful community is equally shocked and horrified. Why would one of their own community put others at risk and who is going to be the next victim. Laurel, Bear, Mae and Trent help everyway they can from treating those injured, to attempting to put out fires and limit damage as well as trying to work out who would be doing something so horrific. When Alyssa is seriously burned, Trent stays with her constantly. Laurel is torn does she stay with her patient or go in search of Bear and Mae….her choice drives a wedge between her and Trent.

Then there’s Gideon, Sharon and Lisa who after Cornell & Williams were defeated decided they wanted to continue to fight to make sure there would be no more Cornell & Williams to try and take over the world. They joined with a group run by a man called Bennet, who initially seemed to have the same values they did but more and more he is just taking what he wants from people rather than protecting them. Gideon, Sharon, Lisa and a group of likeminded people that are also now against Bennett have been in a long hard battle with him for sometime. It comes to a point where their only option is to make a run for it, so Gideon, Sharon & Lisa find themselves on the run with Bennett and his men probably following them, though they hope he just gives up on them. They decide to head to Bears cabin, as Gideon & Mae have kept in touch via the pigeon communication set up. The trio are sure they can lose Bennett and any men he may send after them, if he even bothers.

The long journey to Bears cabin will be hard enough due to old injuries slowing them down but then they end up up two young children who are both reluctant to be with them. So much so they literally sabotage the escape leaving clues for Bennett and his men to follow and shouting out so that he can hear and find them. Gideon, Sharon and Lisa are forced to tell the children some harsh truths so that the children will work with them rather than against them in their attempt to evade capture by Bennett.

Sabotaged World doesn’t end very well for either group. Trent is suffering an injury as well as a broken heart and is feeling somewhat bitter towards Laurel, there’s a now somewhat fractured family, an increasingly ill Mae and a community who now has to rebuild whilst dealing with the realisation that it was in fact two of their own that were being so destructive and deliberately setting the fires.

Things look like they may be looking up for Gideon, Sharon, Lisa and the children when they manage to get a ride in an army vehicle but are they being lulled into a false sense of security.

I really enjoyed catching up with the characters in this book. As in the real world there were some lives lost and not everything goes to plan, people are injured, lives altered forever. There are good characters to only want to help people, bad characters who want to take what others have for themselves and don’t care about the consequences and those in the grey area that are or were good people but due to circumstances have become confused, perhaps a little bitter and those to do bad things which in their mind are justified. The author certainly kept me guessing as to the identity of the culprit deliberately starting the fires was. I had suspicions about a few people with someone who worked at the clinic, a patient and then the actual culprits all being on my list of suspects!

My initial reaction was Wow I didn’t see all that coming! I wanted to reach into the book and give poor Trent a big hug, he has been through enough, and lost more than most but it seems this new harsh world hasn’t finished with him or his new family yet. I can’t wait to read more about these characters and find out if there’s going to be a “relationship” develop between Mae and Gideon, I’m hoping so!

Summing up once again this instalment in the EMP Aftermath is action packed from the beginning to the end. You immediately slip back into this world and are held there hooked to the last words! I’m definitely looking forward to the next book!

I made an epic mistake.

I slept with a hot stranger who looked at me like I wasn’t the thickest girl in the room—like I was wanted. Desired. Seen. It felt harmless. Healing, even. Until I found out he wasn’t a stranger at all. Nope. He was my brother’s best friend. Cool. Totally fine. Nothing to spiral about there.

Enter Reid Rathe. The man I absolutely should not want. The man who bulldozed straight through my vow to swear off men forever (courtesy of my emotionally destructive ex). I knew better than to fall for him. I knew better than to keep sneaking around with the one guy my brother has very clearly labeled off limits. But Reid doesn’t care about rules. He cares about me. He chases. He woos. He steals heated moments and whispers sweet things that lodge themselves in my heart.

And that’s the problem—falling for him would be so dang easy. He says I’m worth it. He says he’d risk everything. The question is… am I brave enough to risk it all for him?

REVIEW

I think the bright orange cover suits the mostly light hearted, flirty vibe of the book really well. The style of the writing of the title and the lips just like you’d draw/write on a college textbook back in the day!

Forbid Me Not is about a group of friends, Dustin & his girlfriend Ivy, his best friend Reid and his other friend Jacob who are at college together. Dustin’s sister Avery has just transferred to a college nearer home and her family after a breakup with her long term boyfriend. Avery had thought he was 'the one' but the once sweet romance they had together in high school turned into a controlling one and when he calls Avery fat, it cuts deep, though that’s not the only reason for the nasty breakup. Her ex has really knocked her confidence, to the point she feels no one will find her attractive.

Avery moves into a college campus apartment with Ivy who may be her brother’s girlfriend but is also a best friend and confidante to Avery. The apartment is opposite her brother Dustin’s apartment that he shares with a quieter, more reserved non partying guy at the beginning of the book though that changes as the book goes on.

Avery's brother Dustin decides to throw a party at his college apartment to welcome his sister and introduce her to his friends. Her brother’s friend Jacob has a seriously heavy hand with the alcohol and has filled her cup to the brim. Her best friend and brother Dustin's girlfriend, Ivy has wandered off as usual being a social butterfly, so Avery finds herself feeling a little lonely and a lot tipsy. Whilst dancing she loses her balance and is caught by a gorgeous hunk, he asks her name and she blurts out Sarah, just in case the hunk thinks Dustin’s sister is off limits. They have an instant attraction and they end up kissing. One thing leads to another and they end up having a one-night stand, have sex over in Avery & Ivys apartment across the hall from the party. When a heavily hung over Avery wakes up the hunk has left leaving Avery feeling a bit disappointed, a little ashamed at having had sex with a guy whose name she didn't even know. Then she shakes it off, thinking she is highly unlikely to even see the guy again, and so what she had sex, she's a newly single woman why shouldn't she have a little fun.

Later whilst at her brother apartment, a guy walks in and Dustin introduces him as his best friend Reid. When Avery looks up to say hi to Reid she locks eyes with the hunk she had sex with, the one she'd told her name was Sarah. Avery is worried what Reid is going to say but he simply smirks, tells her Avery is a pretty name and keeps their one night stand a secret.

Despite knowing Dustin won't like it, Reid pursues a relationship with Avery, slowly gaining her trust, building up her confidence, showering her with compliments, eventually winning her over. The continue meeting in secret right under Dustins nose with Ivy and Jacob keeping their secret whilst warning that they can't keep the fact they're together a secret forever.
Deep down Avery knows that if it comes to a choice between Reid and her brother Dustin, though it would break her heart she'd always choose her brother.
Would Dustin really want to step in the way of his sister Avery and best friend Reids happiness though?

I loved the writing style of this one, it was a steady but constant pace, it really drew you in and you quickly became invested in Avery’s happiness and wanting to know exactly what her ex had done to her to break her heart, seriously knock her confidence and make her swear off dating! Then there’s Reid who isn’t a stranger to heartbreak himself with his last girlfriend being more interested in his money and what his family could do for her than their relationship.

I loved the sections in the book where Avery was arguing with herself about what she should or shouldn’t do. Second guessing her own actions, like we all do at times. This also made her all the more relatable.

This one definitely hits you emotionally, lets just say after reading Forbid Me Not and discovering how caring and considerate he was we all need a Reid Rathe in our lives.
That’s not saying the other two guys in the book aren’t swoon worthy, Dustin is definitely committed to his relationship with Ivy though he may not know it I think Ivy is the one in charge! Jacob starts out the typical love ‘em and leave ‘em type, in fact he doesn’t always get a name or a number!! He then sees Dustin and Reids relationships and starts to warm to the idea of having a more, steady relationship himself, so we do see Jacob develop as time goes on. I should say that though Jacob is friends with Dustin he is a really good friend to Avery too, and who knows if Reid hadn’t been on the scene she could have been the girl to change him, if Dustin had allowed Jacob near her in the first place.

I have to admit there were certain sections in the book I was internally shouting “just tell him!” and then there were also parts where I wanted to get hold of Dustin and give him a really hard shake and tell him to stop being so selfish! You’ll know which bits I mean when you read the book.

The book did remind me of my younger days, late teens, flirting, the banter, the laughs and yes, the unrequited love and heartbreaks. I think that’s one of the reasons that the book is so good as a reader you can so easily identify with Avery. It brought back some good fun memories as well as some not so great ones too! The whole part of the plot of the protective brother and secret love made me think of my own parents “love story” my dad being best friends with my mums brother and my mum singing the song “Secret Love by Doris Day” and I couldn’t get the song out of my head until I had finished the book!

My initial thoughts upon finishing the book were Wow, I really enjoyed that! A real “feel good” book. A message to all that have gone through heartbreak that perhaps there’s just the right caring guy out there!

Summing up I don’t read a whole lot of contemporary, flirty romance type books but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and I have to admit a little sad when it ended. I loved the characters. I enjoyed being irritated by Reids parents wanting to set him up in an arranged marriage when he clearly stated he had no feelings for the girl they had chosen for him. I was sorry to be saying goodbye to Avery, Ivy, Dustin, Reid & Jacob when the book ended. I’d definitely read more of this genre by this author!

Finally understand every single pop culture joke, obscure reference, and witty one-liner that makes Gilmore Girls one of the most reference-packed shows in television history.

Gilmore Girls Pop Culture Reference Guide is an in-depth look at the thousands of topical references to people, places, movies, music, and events that make up many of the funniest lines on the ever-popular television series Gilmore Girls, bringing new and longtime fans alike in on the joke while educating readers about pop culture and world events from the turn of the twenty-first century. Despite the timelessness of its humor and heart, however, there is one aspect of Gilmore Girls that firmly anchors it in its era: the sizable cache of dated pop culture references that were topical for the time period but leave today’s viewers, especially those of younger generations, scratching their heads.

Over the course of seven seasons and 153 episodes from 2000 to 2007, followed by a four-part revival series in 2016, Gilmore Girls has become a cultural touchstone with an extraordinarily devoted fan base. In every episode, its fast-paced style of dialogue offered biting observations and timeless humor about issues such as dating, sex, marriage, divorce, race, gender equality, gay rights, and more, while its characters offered rapid-fire pop culture references with seemingly every breath. Every episode is laced with jokes about people, places, and events that have been blurred, or even forgotten, by time, from the Bangles to the Mothman Prophecies to the works of Shakespeare to the long-forgotten Glitter. Meticulously researched episode by episode, Gilmore Girls Pop Culture Reference Guide is an eye-opening, illuminating encyclopedia of thousands of topical jokes that will help both new and longtime fans experience their favorite show in a whole new light.

REVIEW
I love that the cover features Lorelai and Rory, it is probably from a scene within the series, and I like that.

The book is quite literally a listing of all the pop culture references made within the series, set out in list form, episode by episode. Which is interesting and it does make the book a handy companion to the series. I’m sure Gilmore Girls Fans will love to add it to their collection of memorabilia.

The book does fit the genres listed, its non-fiction, its entertainment, it has all those pop culture references from within the show and it’s a reference book, but it just feels like something is missing, that its not wholly finished off.

To be honest I was really disappointed, this book could have been so much more. A few photographs of cast members, cast anecdotes, photographs of scenes from the series would all have made great additions and broke up what is really just a list of text. I’m sorry to say it is set out like a rather monotonous reference book.

The Gilmore Girls series is funny, moving, light hearted, inspiring, fun and full of these amazing pop culture references that I enjoyed seeing/hearing and yes, I did enjoy reading them in the book and thinking of the scenes within the show that they were from, but the way they are presented in the book is just cold, flat and unexciting and uninspiring. It’s a shame really as I was really excited about the book when I saw it was available.

My initial thoughts were that the book was a little disappointing, I had expected pictures and more not just the actual pop culture quotes and meanings. I suppose it does deliver what it says, in that it has the pop culture references listed episode by episode but I honestly think that this book really missed its full potential.

Summing up I was expecting most of what this book provided but much more too!
