Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again.

When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner with a penchant for blackmail got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for.

Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control.

That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.

BURYING WATER:

BECOMING RAIN

CHASING RIVER

EXCERPT
It’s just a regular ringtone. For me, though, it’s the wail of a war siren, and I’m immediately alert. There is only one person who has this number, and I didn’t expect him to use it again so soon.
The tile is cool against my bare feet as I roll out of bed. I collect the phone from the nightstand with one fluid movement, unhindered by sheets or the morning sluggishness that an average person might face. Stepping through the propped-open patio doors and onto the balcony, I answer with a low, curt “Yeah.” The sky is just beginning to lighten over the quiet bay. Dozens of boats sit moored below, their passengers lulled into deep sleep by the ocean air and rhythmic waves. I’m high enough up that I’m not likely to offend anyone with my lack of clothing, especially at this hour. Not that I’m truly concerned by it.
“Ice.”
The code name is a sharp contrast to the warm breeze skating across my bare skin. My adrenaline begins to spike, all the same. Hearing it means that I will be forced to leave this haven soon. Sooner than I had hoped.
“How is recovery going?”
I instinctively peer down at the angry red scar on the outside of my thigh, where a bullet drilled into my flesh and muscle just three weeks ago, outside of Kabul. I nearly bled out before I made it to the doc. He patched me up on a makeshift operating table, buried deep in a maze of rooms, and charged me a hefty price.
“Like new,” I lie.
“Good.” Bentley’s voice is rich and smooth, a welcome sound in a sea of strangers. “Where are you now?”
I peer out over the beautiful vista of crystal blue water and whitewashed stone buildings, the volcanic rock cliffs in the distance, reluctant to divulge my location. I sank a good chunk of my last payout on renting this one-bedroom villa for the month. It’s my private sanctuary, where I can revel in anonymity and peace for a while, before finding somewhere else to drift to.
Bentley has never asked before.
But he also has the technical capabilities to trace this call. If he really wants to find out, then he will. In fact, the second I picked up, he probably already had his answer. “Where do I need to be?” I say instead.
“San Francisco.”

THE PROLOGUE

I will never understand peoples’ fascination with the apocalypse. Why would you waste so much time and energy worrying about something you can’t change? Besides, most of the time, it never comes to fruition, anyway. Remember Y2K? I don’t. I was too young, but I’ve heard stories. What a hullabaloo that was. People were so afraid of computers failing and throwing society back into the Dark Ages, they stockpiled supplies and moved into the wilderness so they could get away from technology. Why would they move to the wilderness? If technology was going to fail, wouldn’t they be just as safe in a city? I guess they were afraid when it did, everyone would go crazy and start killing each other. Either way, it didn’t happen. I wonder how those people felt afterward.
Then there was the whole 2012 scare. This one was supposedly based on an ancient prediction, so you know it was reliable. Are you kidding? Even the Mayans didn’t believe their own ancestors’ “vision.” What happened was there had been a tablet that had the Mayan calendar carved into it. The end was broken and faded, so no one knew what it said. Our culture, being the pessimistic lot we are, automatically assumed it was an end-of-the-world warning, but, again, nothing happened on December 21, 2012. Christmas came and went, and I think everyone everywhere, even the skeptics, had a little something more to be thankful for. Life went on as usual, and all those doomsayers faded into obscurity.
The day the world did end was pretty nondescript. By that I mean there was no nuclear explosion or asteroid or monumental natural disaster. There weren’t even any horsemen or plagues to announce the end was coming. The world ended fairly quietly. I couldn’t even give you a date because it happened at different times depending on where you were. It was never predicted, and I’m sure a scenario no one even considered. Who really thinks the dead are going to rise from the grave and destroy the majority of the population?  No one but Hollywood, and we all know those are just movies, but that’s exactly what happened. Those of us who survived were left wide-eyed, mouth agape, trying to figure out what to do next.
There were a few who were able to pull their heads out and organize those left behind. They made sure the populace had food, shelter, and protection. They were saviors, the United States’ heroes. Life wouldn’t have gone on without them, and it was pretty difficult those first few years after the zompocalypse.
Sometimes it’s difficult for me to remember what life was like before the rise of the undead. I was a teenager, though I hesitate to say normal. I wasn’t deformed or anything, but my classmates thought I was strange. I had a fascination with the dark, the macabre, although I wasn’t a Goth or Emo. I read books and magazines about serial killers. I didn’t idolize them or want to be like them—hell no—I was fascinated with how evil and black a human’s soul could get.
I wanted to be a psychologist and work with the criminally insane, maybe figure out why they did what they did. Apparently, when you’re fifteen, your friends think you’re weird if you have desires to help someone other than yourself. While they were worried about becoming popular and getting the right boyfriend, I tried to figure out how to make society better.
Of course, those dreams will never come true. Society doesn’t exist. Everything I once held dear is gone. I lost my parents to the horde, like a lot of kids. Unlike some of the others, mine weren’t taken by surprise or in some freak accident. They were taken because of their own stupidity. Some days I miss them a lot, but others I believe they got what they deserved. I might sound callous and uncaring, but what about them? Why would they abandon their fifteen-year-old daughter? It used to keep me up at night, trying to find the answer to that question, but I’ve given up asking it. No reason wasting time on things that could’ve or should’ve been.
As I stare out the passenger side window of the semi, I’m reminded how bleak the future has become. The truck rolls down a once heavily traveled highway that has been reduced to a cracked trail. Gas stations and towns dotting the landscape have been abandoned and are crumpling into the weeds that are taking them over. There are a few areas that still resemble pre-zombie destruction, and these are the military outposts set up along the road, used for protection and refueling. I use the term “military” loosely because there is no formal military anymore. It’s a rag-tag group of men and women who were lucky enough to get guns. I chuckle to myself. It’s been two years since I was last out in the world, and a lot has changed since then. I still remember the day the zombies attacked. It’s as clear as if it’d happened yesterday.

EXCERPT
His muddy gaze slid over me with disdain and his lips curled up into a sneer. “You really didn’t think I was going to let you get away with that, did you?”
Internally I was trying to quickly come up with a plan. I wasn’t some preternaturally gifted being of some sort, not that those existed. Sure I took martial arts and self-defense but...in real life being about a foot shorter than this guy put me at a huge disadvantage. I usually used surprise...and weapons to even those kinds of odds. I was lacking both of those at the moment. I donned the best fake smile I could muster. “Get away with what? I told you I’m not for sale. You got what you paid for.”
The kid’s eyes narrowed and hostility rolled off of him in waves. “You led me on. You made me think—”
“I never led you on for even a second. You paid for and I gave you time in the private room with me where you received a very up close and personal dance that lasted the span of a few songs. I told you before, my sexual favors aren’t for sale. Whatever you’ve heard about me or any of the other girls at Club Elite is a lie. This isn’t that kind of place.” I crossed my arms over my chest and attempted to make it seem like he wasn’t intimidating me. How the hell did he get past the security downstairs and know where to find me?
He rushed at me, letting me know that our little tête-à-tête was over. I dropped my bag and made myself ready. I can do this. Just pretend— My inner pep talk was cut off as I was tackled to the ground and all the air left my lungs. I strained my neck muscles to keep the impact on my head as little as possible. I tried to bring my knee up between his legs but he was already pinning me with his full body weight. I head butted him instead. My forehead made contact with his nose and he screamed in tandem with the loud crunching noise the blow made. Blood spurted everywhere and he rolled off of me. He recovered more quickly than I expected and stars danced in front of my eyes when his fist connected with the side of my face. I collapsed onto my back and blinked dazedly. Taking a full out punch was something I’d never done before. It didn’t feel good, to say the least, and it was more difficult to shake off than people in movies always made it seem.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
As I finished reading Bitterroot Pt1 my first thoughts were you can't be ending it there! So to say I was really eager to read more is a bit of an understatement!

MY REVIEW
As I think I have said before I am lucky enough to be part of Heather's Street Team "Heather's Hotshots" so was given an e-arc of this one in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to both Heather Hildenbrand & S.M. Reine & Elephantine Publishers too. I did begin reading as soon as it was available. I think it's fairly safe to say that I am quite addicted to this series! Even though the cover is exactly the same as for Bitterroor Part One this one, but for the purpose of this review and keeping it in the same format as other reviews, I will talk about my opinion on the cover now. The cover is a rich evening blue colour, and features a moonlit background. In front of the moon are two females, both wearing white dresses, whose joined hands are holding a beautiful bouquet of deep red roses. The female on the left (as you look at the book) is blonde, and her dress has straps on it. The female on the right is dark haired and her white dress is strapless. The title of the book is in a cursive font, that catches by eye. After reading the book I'd say that the two females on the front cover are very good likenesses of the females described in the book, in fact the cover image could be an actual scene from the book, and fits really well within the plot of the book that fit at the end of Part One, and from the beginning of Part Two.
Part two almost picks up right where part one left off, having said that there is a little recap of the situation at the beginning of this book.
So a little about the two main characters, Charlie Vuk, the werewolf shifter who knows nothing about pack life or pack politics but will soon be getting a crash course! Charlie has lived in exile from the pack with her mother until her father turns up and kidnaps her, informing her she has to dual against the half sister she didn't know she had for the title of alpha of the pack she has newly met and never knew she belonged with.
Regan Vuk, the werewolf shifter who feels she has the right by birth to be the next female Alpha. Regan has the support of the majority of the pack, has grown up with the pack so knows all the traditions and political nuances of the pack too.
This part of the book reveals the identity of the mystery man who Charlie has befriended. In fact this very same person offers to coach Charlie, to teach her to listen to her wolf and to help her learn how to fight for her forthcoming dual. No one from her actual pack has helped her prepare for the dual other supplying her with a book to read about the packs history.
I enjoyed the section where William Vuk the girls father and temporary Alpha takes a class on hunting, something we learn both the girls deal with extremely differently to one another.
It seems that Regan is of the opinion that she will win the dual/trials that are set easily and is trying to train with friend, former possible Beta, Carter, to learn a way to take down Charlie without going too far and killing her. Regan is totally unaware that Charlie is training hard as she wants to prove herself to the pack as being worthy as an Alpha and has no intention of going easy of Regan.
Regan even attempts to bond over "girly" time with Charlie. Regan shows an interest in Charlie's favourite type of shop, . . .antiques. The half sister's relationship seems to be improving, but there is always the looming dual/trials ahead and somehow keeps a wedge in place between the girls. During the time the girls spend together Regan reveals quite a bit of pack history to Charlie explaining how their pack became settled in this area and why.
There is also an unknown threat of someone following both girls too!
I love the friendship/possible romances between Charlie and her mystery man and Regan and long time best friend Carter!
We also meet the vampire Prince in this book, learning that though he may be a Prince that not all is well within his family either. Both girls meet the other vampires at the party. You can literally feel the tension between the two rival clans.
I also want to add I really enjoyed the writing style of these authors and would be interested to learn how the co-writing process worked and who wrote which parts. I would also class the two parts I have read as more short stories than novella's. I am wondering if the individual parts will be put together to form a full length book, I think maybe that's why there is just the one cover. I suppose it depends on how many parts there will be to this series. This series has oodles of potential and could go on for quite a few more parts/books. (hint, hint, please)
So did I enjoy the book? I an totally enamoured with this series! Even though Heather Hildenbrand and S.M. Reine ended this novella at a moment that made me want to scream as I wanted to read much much more! They both sure know how to do a cliff hanger. Would I recommend the book? Oh yes, an absolute must read for YA shifter fans! Certainly put me in the mood for more shifters and there whole unique brand of politics, Alpha problems, and territorial issues. Would I want to read another novella/book in this series? Most certainly! as soon as it's available please. (pretty please) Would I want to read other titles by Heather Hildenbrand, or S.M. Reine? I have already read other titles by Heather Hildenbrand such as Imitation, which I also loved! I do have some more of her titles to read too. I have to admit I have had one or two of S.M. Reine titles for a while and sadly not gotten around to reading them, however after reading this series I will be reading some of those titles.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Being totally honest here my first reaction upon finishing this short book was "You can't seriously be ending it here!2 and "What a place to end it, I want more pleeeeeease now!" I truly love this series. I love the writing style throughout the books, and adore the characters and where the plot seems to be heading. I already have my thoughts of how I want the relationships to progress between the sisters and between the sisters and their possible, potential other halves.

WHAT IS KIRIGAMI?
So I guess these days most people have heard of Origami, the art of paper folding and may have even had a go at doing it. Kirigami is the Japanese technique of making intricate pop-up scenes out of a single sheet of paper. The world’s leading Kirkigami artist is Marc Hagan-Guirey, aka Paper Dandy. His book Horrorgami: 20 Gruesome Scenes to Cut and Fold is a truly fascinating new book based on Marc’s sell-out Horrorgami show in London that took place last year. This book is aimed at both newcomers to the art of Kirigami aa well as more experienced fans of  this new art. The book contains ‘cut out and keep’ scenes from cult horror films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Sleepy Hollow and King Kong for you to recreate and is packed full of incredible photographs of Marc’s intricate, spooky cut outs – Kirkigami is the Japanese technique of making intricate pop-up scenes out of a single sheet of paper.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
I was asked to review this book by Midas PR, and thought it would possible make a great book to check out around Halloween! I didn't quite know what to expect from the book, would it be a list of instructions with a few pictures or what it would involve within the book, so I was looking forward to finding out more about the book and the actual craft of paper folding. I have had books on origami and done a little of it with my daughter when she was younger.

MY REVIEW
As I explained somewhat in my "Initial Thoughts" this book was brought to my attention by Midas PR, though I have to say it is the type of book I would pick up in a book store to look at. So I was actually sent a paperback copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The cover is done in several shades of blue, so giving the illusion of a dark but moonlit night. The only downside about the cover to me is the sticker on the cover which informs you how many designs are in the book. Personally I would have preferred the sticker not to be there at all and either the information be actually printed somewhere on the cover or on the inside front cover instead. So would the cover make me pick this book up from a bookstore shelf? Yes, I think the book cover is attractive and certainly catches your eye making you want to pick up the book and look inside it.
As the sticker on the front cover says the book contains "20 Gruesome Scenes to cut and fold" So looking through the book the first scenes look to be the easier ones in the back becoming gradually more intricate and complicated as you work your way through the book. The first thing you actually come to within the book is the Introduction which explains a little about the art of paper folding and cutting from the author and how he has combined some of his favourite hobbies and craft skills within the pages of this book. The reader is also given the correct name for this craft which is Kirigami = the art of paper cutting and folding. When I originally saw this book I actually had jumped to the conclusion that is was based solely on origami and the art of folding. The next information section in the book gives a list and explanation for each item needed to carry out this fascinating craft under the heading of "How To Use This Book" . This section also lists and explains the different folds you will need to use throughout the book such as the Mountain and Valley folds, Marking mountain scores and Progressive folds.  The next page has more folding technique instructions along with images showing you what they look like. Then you go straight on to Design 01 That Thing under The Stairs, there's a description about where the inspiration came from for this scene which is quite detailed, then a large image of what the finished scene should look like when done, next there are the instructions along with the small images of the folding and cutting needed for re-creating the scene yourself as well as a pull out sheet that is all marked out for you to build the scene yourself. This way of explanation/description, then finished scene picture followed by the instructions & images with the "how to do" along with the pull out sheet to use for you to physically build the scene from scratch.
As I said there are 20 Designs that range from the beginners, 01 That Thing under The Stairs, and  02 Crypt Creeping to a more mid level selection of 07 The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, 10 Farmhouse Bloodbath, and 12 The Werewolf (which is the scene pictured on the front cover of the book. Then of course there are also the more intricate designs of 15 Dr Frankenstein's Laboratory, 18 Dracula's Castle, and finally 20 Monster Attack. The scenes are truly beautiful and I would think most people would happily display these with immense pride upon completing them.
So what sort of people would buy this book? Well anyone could buy it as a gift, maybe for Halloween for a child or grandchild instead of candy. Or a great gift to find within your Christmas or Birthday Presents. Though I think the quality of the book, it's pages and the intricacy of the designs would appeal to children and adults alike. My daughter always loved origami and she is going to test out one or two of the designs for me. So I will be revisiting this book to let you all know how she coped with the fine detailing and patience for this.
What sort of people would this book appeal to? Someone with lots of patience who love's crafting, doing things such as decoupage, card-making or perhaps even crocheting. Having said that I think this book would suit both male & female "crafter's".
What age group would it be suitable for? I'd say due to the the whole patience and intricacy needed to re-create the scenes it would be suitable for older children or as I said above adults.
So I've covered a lot of positives about the book, did I find any negatives? Well the print size within the book was definitely too small for me even read with my glasses! which I think is a great shame as I would think this could be the case for many people who would love and enjoy this book. I really wanted to read through the whole Introduction, about the art of Kirigami and how Marc put the book together and how he came up with the idea's for the individual designs as well as why/how he began doing this detailed artistry. The thing is there is plenty of empty space that could have been put to better use by making the writing a more readable font size.
A negative my daughter mentioned was she would have hated pulling out the page to do the design as when she was younger she would have thought it would have "spoilt" the book and defaced it in a way. Maybe the templates could have been all together in a separate booklet or as individual cards, however I personally fell that perhaps that would have ruined the flow of the book a little.
Is there anything else I can say about the book? My daughter also thought it would be a great idea to have an online resource to download more templates, or perhaps a DVD with the book that has more templates on it. I have to admit the instructions are a little vague upon first reading them for a complete Kirigami novice, and I'd say that it takes lots and lots of patience and a certain level of skill to attempt to re-create the scenes. There was certainly a level of frustration in the air as my 19yr old daughter and I attempted 01 That Thing under The Stairs the apparently easiest scene to recreate in the book!

FINAL THOUGHTS
So did I enjoy the book? From an artistic, creative point of view this book truly is beautiful, and a treasure trove of scenes to recreate yourself.
Would I recommend the book? Yes, for older children, or that person in your life who has everything and loves creating things, perhaps the "card-maker" in the family could convert some of the techniques and use them in their other crafting too! I also think that at the price of just £12.95 (price correct at time of reviewing) this book is well worth the price too. I purposely didn't look at the price of the book before checking to see the cost. I admit I thought it would have been much more expensive! Personally I thinks its a reasonable cost to try a new hobby! An ideal book for Halloween!
Would I want another book of this genre? I think, being totally honest here, that for me another book would have more "beginners" "easier" scenes to recreate to slowly build up to the more intermediary and difficult templates and scenes.
Would I be interested in trying any other such artistic books? Yes, I love discovering new past times and hobbies.
